i have a 2002 liberty. when backing up i get an almost rubbing noise-
appears to come from the rear. it makes the noise, stops and repeats
as tho happening during the revolution of the wheel or?
additionally when going over speed bumps in the road, the front
suspension makes a "bungie" noise like squeaking springs. just had
all the front brakes redone and they checked the rear for that rubbing
noise, found nothing, and brakes were okay -
transmission hesitates as well, but only periodically and coming to stop
or upon taking off, is this normal?
this is new vehicle to me - just purchased 3 weeks ago. not familiar
with the liberty- only the cherokee's.
anyone had anything similar going on?

Hi Debra, and welcome to JeepKJ

Re: ****** hesitations

the hesitiations, does it feel like a slight jolt of sorts..? (when coming to a stop at least)
I have an 02 LTD and it kinda jolts when coming to a stop usually when the ****** is cold, or when coming to a fast stop....i've asked this question before, and from everyone's feedback, it's normal..it's the ******, not quite downshifting fast enough...on acceleration tho, it's fine...(or at least i havnt really felt anything different)

the squeeking noise on the suspension..usually happens when it's cold...after it warms up, it's fune...there is also some sort of noise (it sounds like it's loose coming from the front) when hitting bumps....had that checked out, but dealer found nothing...(there is a thread here on that, and it seems like it's a normal thing)...

rubbing noise from the rear i have seen numerous posts on..
did u check out the e-brake?...

thanks for ****** info,
supposedly the e brake was checked. am taking this to dealer
on sat. with as much info as i can get to see what they say
this particular model of jeep seems to have lots of groans and
creaks - more so even than my cherokee
however these concern me. it also makes more noise than i think
it should when turning so am having power steering checked as well,
and sway bars, and . . . . .
thankfully have extended warranty - so they can give it the once over
will advise what the results are when we are done in case anyone
else needs info.
thanks again.

It's just the nature of the Liby. It makes noises.

Power Steering noises? Normal.
Transmission Noises? Normal.
Clunking? Normal.
Sway Bar? I've been through this one as well. I got my bushings replaced under warranty, although I've heard reports that it's just a cold weather noise, and will go away when it warms up. We'll see... I haven't had the noise come back.

Rubbing when backing up... I don't *think* I've heard this one before... but if I have, I probably just disregarded it... Excuse? Nature of the beast!

Enjoy your Liby!

suspension /rear end noises

JUST GOT THE LIBBY BACK FROM DEALER - NOT A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE.
HERE'S THE UPDATE, THE SUSPENSION NOISE FROM THE FRONT END
REQUIRED NEW BUSHINGS - AFTER REPLACEMENT - HEY NO NOISE
IMAGINE THAT!
I AM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR END NOISE UPON
BACKING UP. THEY SUPPOSEDLY CLEANED AND ADJUSTED BRAKE
AND "E" BRAKE, BUT OBVIOUSLY THE NOISE IS STILL THERE.
SO NOW AM WONDERING ABOUT THE CALIPHER OR SOMETHING ELSE
AS I READ SOME OTHER COMMENTS IN YOUR FORUMS. HAVE NOT
NOTICED ANY SMELL, OR SMOKE FROM THE AREA. I GUESS HAVE
TO GO BACK TO THE DEALER AND GET THEM TO GET IT RESOLVED.
CHRYSLER WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO COVER THE BUSHINGS AND ALSO
A RATCHETING NOISE IN THE CONSOLE GEAR SHIFT WHICH JUST HAPPENED A FEW DAYS BEFORE TAKING IT TO DEALER. OF COUSE
I HAD TO FIGHT W/DEALER, BUT CHRYSLER STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE
AND MADE GOOD ON IT.
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON THIS REAR END NOISE. IT IS A ROTATIONAL NOISE AS YOU BACK UP, NOTICED MOSTLY AS MY FOOT
IS USUALLY ON THE BRAKE AT THE TIME OF BACKING UP. ASSUMED
IT WOULD BE A BRAKE SITUATION, BUT NOT REALLY SURE.
PLS ADVISE. THANKS
DEB

You have a 2002, so, you won't have the caliper "problem" that some people have been "reporting". There are no rear disc brakes, just dumb drums. (Sorry 2002KJers) lol3.gif

BTW: heard the cold clunking today in the rear, but it seems to go away once I leave the driveway.

no it's definitely a rubbing noise - it rubs - stops - rubs- stops
like its rotational - thats why it is hard to identify

I too have a recurring clunk when idling when it's cold out. Hasn't bothered me so far, just an occaisonal clunk coming from the rear. No idea what's causing it. Happens when vehicle is in park, not moving.

If possible try jacking the rear axle up and set on jack stands with tires off the ground. Make sure you are in 2WD and try to duplicate the noise by simulating the same driving situation at which it occurs while some one outside the vehicle locates the source of the noise. On a flat surface with the tires a few inches off the ground you won't go anywhere, just make sure vehicle is stable on jack stands. Husband, boyfriend, brother, someone must be able to help you. Also, with engine off, spin rear tires and listen for the noise. Some rubbing between the brake shoes and drum surface is normal especially in a humid area where the fresh metal of the drum may form a thin layer of rust over night, then you will hear the rust untill it is worn off. If it is continuously coming from the rear brakes they may be out of round, have they been heated up recently, how old are they? Listen at the differential, round thing in the middle of axle. If you are able to locate the noise but unable to fix it yourself at least you will know what you are talking about when you speak with a mechanic.

thanks for the tips - my question would be that if it were an out
of round situation - then you would think that rolling forward w/
brake on would create the same scenario - however this does not
happen. i appreciate the suggestion and will probably still do this
to see if we can replicate the situation.
our prev. expererience with the dealer on our 98 cherokee was
really great, did not expect this last go round to be so unpleasant.
my husband knows not to turn me loose on them -
i know we will get this resolved, just wish it did not take so long.
we did however get chrysler to make good on some other issues
w/this rig
so thanks again.

Noisy Rear

Does the Jeep's brake pedal pulsate when the brakes are used? Sounds like the rear drums may be warped. Just a WAG.
