So my pre-wheeling inspection for this week had me come across a leaky axle seal on the RF of the front axle. Can anyone tell me if this is a mother of a job or should it be fairly easy for someone that's decently mechanically inclined? Would love to get rid of the D30A housing for a steel diff but that's out of the question.

I'm not going to tell you it's easy but it's doable with the right equipment.

I use a small slide hammer with a really sharp drywall type of screw on the tip of it. The sharp screw will stab into the seal, then just screw it in and give it some wacks. It will eventually pull the seal out, if the screw rips out of the seal, just stab it in another spot......the seal will eventually come out. Here's a picture I found online..... [IMG]

Don't seem to bad... Labor book at work calls for a little over an hour or so. I've got access to the tools I need but it's more of if I get the motivation anytime soon lol. Thanks for the advice! Might rip the cover off and put a new gasket and some Amsoil severe gear fluid in while I'm at it.

Do you just have a leak? or is there play where the CV axle plugs into the housing? If so, the bearing is gone too. Mine was worn to the point the intermediate shaft splines were shot too.

I ended up pulling the diff, CVs, and driveshaft all at once so my gf could still drive the Jeep while I worked on the diff and waited for parts.

No play, just leakage. Plan on getting into the back axle and putting in new bearings once I get the money for a new diff cover. It's gonna get an overhaul in the ass end once I'm all together financially for it.
