I have a 2005 Jeep CRD 2.8L I'm having a P0340 Code issue. The code is for the camshaft sensor, which I replaced. I cleared the code but it came back. I read online that the code can actually be an issue with the crankshaft sensor. So I replaced the crankshaft sensor. The code still comes back. I've noticed that its not starting like it used to. Often stumbles while starting. If it stumbles I need to shut the key off and retry. Almost always starts on the second try. Once its running everything seems fine. Any help or direction would be appreciated.

A strange fault, without either sensor a CRD won't run, but it does! Try giving it a hard reset, take the battery lead off overnight.
Check all the wiring and connectors on the cam sensor, might be a bit of corrosion somewhere
The hard starting is probably a worn injector. Do a spillback test to see what they are returning.

I had an error in my original post which I have corrected. The P0340 code is for the camshaft position sensor. I have replaced both the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. You are right, if I unplug the camshaft position sensor the Jeep will not run. Plug it back in and it runs, which would indicate to me it is working. I have tried removing the battery cables but only left them off for 30 minutes. I'll try leaving the off overnight tonight.

It's sort of working... the ecu is struggling to see it, if the hard reset doesn't work then look at the wiring I'd guess you have a corroded connection somewhere. Also stick with genuine Bosch sensors if possible, there's a lot of cheap junk available...

The hard start could be an injector, but the hard start correlates to the P0340 code. This could be a coincidence but it seems unlikely. I'm unfamiliar with the spillback test, but I'll do some research and see if I can do it. I'm traveling in our motorhome so I have somewhat limited tools. I'm going to start out with the hard start that you suggested. If that doesn't work hen I'm going to replace the camshaft sensor again, in case I got a bad one. Its happened to me before. Then I'll trace the wiring looking for any issues. If that doesn't work, I'll start drinking.

I tried doing the hard reset without success. Going to start looking for corroded wires.
