OscarMike/Howard Hughes Liberty Concept - work in progress

Ignoring the timeline of history..... What if Jeep had made an Oscar Mike edition of the first generation Liberty... And what if industrial age aviation inventor Howard Hughes had been asked to design it... What would that kj look like?? Well it might have looked something like the photos that follow. :-D

A little background history - I bought a 2006 jeep Liberty Renegade a little over a year ago. I always liked the kj, and especially the renegade versions, but hated the bland interior. Eventhough I had no experience customizing an automobile at all, as a professional artist, I decided to give it a try. And what started as a minor make over of the interior turned into an extreme makeover of the entire vehicle, and I think a genuine piece of art. It's a little retro industrial age aviation, a little steampunk/dieselpunk SciFi, a little historical fiction, and a lot of fun. Lol. My grandfather served in the army air corps, drove the jeeps, painted and customized the first jeeps, and became a pilot with his own plane during the days when Howard Hughes was the hero of the time. So this vehicle is also a tribute to him.

It is still very much a work in progress with much left to do. But I decided to share what I have done so far with hopefully some kj lovers that might appreciate it. Happy viewing

Here are a couple exterior photos. It sits almost 4" higher than when I bought it. Thanks to a skyjacker lift kit and aggressive tires. It still needs a full size spare tire and I have plans for a one of a kind rack. And I'd like to remove the rear trunk area windows and replace them with netting.

Looks like you are having lots of fun with your KJ. Nice work. I love all the detail. Some of it is over the top for me, but the work is excellent. It's unfortunate that you have put so much into it and then did a Skyjacker lift instead of a real lift. But everything else is just great.

Thanks. :). It's been A LOT of work getting to this point. And I still have the windshield pillars, the door interiors, and the steering wheel to do on the inside. As well as some custom work on the outside. But it's a labor of love.

I actually double layered the steering wheel with two different leather covers for added comfort. I knew I wanted the custom stitched on kind, and two tone black and gray. But given that the quality of what you are buying off the internet is a question mark, I ordered 2 different covers - one from Wheelskins, and the other one I can't remember. Then I put the one I liked better ( i think it's the Wheelskins ) over the other one. The thickness and softness is SO comfortable! Kind of a pain to stitch right but Quality leather!

I'll try to remember to check on the brand, and if I'm wrong about it being wheelskins I'll try to post it.

All I have to say is wow. Looks fantastic. I like the vents. Are those from a wrangler? I'd like to use those instead of the ones it comes with

Thanks for the compliments. :). At first I took some simple satin silver bezels made for the wranglers and dremeled all of the stuff off of the back of them and glued the trim pieces around the existing liberty vents. See attached pics. But it restricted the vent movement a bit.

Eventually I replaced those with the whole vents of the new wrangler, fitting them into the liberty dash. It takes some skill with a dremel tool and some tedious cutting and grinding but it can be done. Then I added all of the rivets and such to them.

Yep, most everything was hand made on the cheep. This is first time I have ever used my artistic skills on a vehicle before but it's turning out awesome. I plane to show it around after I finish it and then sell it if the price is right. If not I'll keep it forever. Lol
