I'm currently in the market for a rear hitch for my 05 KJ.

I checked out the Uhaul hitch but didn't like how it stuck out past the bumper so far. Easily hooking up a trailer is not a concern to me as I'll mainly use the hitch for a cargo carrier for fishing/hunting/camping. Need a place to strap down a deer.

I'd like the hitch to be as low profile as possible and the receiver to sit flush with the bumper.

From the research I've done it seems a Curt hitch would best fit this criteria. Anyone have pics of one installed? Or suggestions for a different brand hitch?

Throw on a KK hitch then
sits higher than a KJ one
then you can do a MUDD cut on the bumper and be done :smokin:
with cut bumper and UHaul hitch
very old picture, my rear looks nothing like that now :smokin:

Mr Mudd, i was just outside checking out my rear bumper, because i also plan on cutting it...did you cut yours flush with the frame there? Did you move up the license light harness?

Cut about 4 inches off of it I think it was
I had a larger tail pipe on and had cut out for it so just went from there
If you look at the rear flares, I started at lower "rivit in the flare, right below it and cut around straight
Didn't move the license plate light, made the plate "smaller" :happy175:

The curt hitch also sits even with the rear bumper pre cutting. But if your cutting it then never mind.

Looks good. They're rather expensive compared to aftermarket hitches, no? If I can find one for a decent price I'd go for it.

Ahh i see. I was looking at it from the undercarriage and was thinking you had trimmed it up higher...but i guess if you had the bottom of the tire divit would be the bottom of the bumper

ah, not sure what you mean, I did cut 4-4.5 inches off the bottom
not the very bottom one, its actually the 2nd one ( rivit ) up from the bottom
Heres another picture
this shows maybe better how much I took off the bottom, like I said I had cut out before for that tip, when I did the bumper cut did away with the tip as well

That looks pretty good like that! I gotta start saving for that komodo. I may go a little higher and match it with the frame there....we shall see. Debating on the dremel or the drywall saw like you mentioned

Like Hoosier said the OE hitch sits up high plus it's built well.

I had a Curt hitch on another vehicle and was disappointed in the early onset of corrosion. Their marketing talks a lot about the corrosion protection they use and the closed tube to prevent rot from the inside - but mine was a mess after one winter. And I wash my vehicles regularly.

My .02...

Uncentered photo to show tire postion, hitch hangs off tight on bumper bottom. Upgrade your hardware, I think their grade 8.8. popular opinion says their weak. I have not done so yet.

The OEM hitch sits very flush with the bumper...but the receiver is almost flush to the bumper...which causes an issue when you are trying to hook up a trailer.....

the trailer's coupler is right in the same spot as the spare tire....so UHAUL actually improved it by offering a longer receiver....

Here is UHAUL on my KJ...with out the ball portion, its almost invisible...the tubing tucks nicely under the bumper...

OEM HITCH....with extension....

I haven't run into issues towing with my OE hitch. Plenty of room.
