This may be a stupid question, but I figured id ask.

A I'm combing through the KJ's 4X4 system, I've heard that if you replace your front CV's, that you have to replace your Intermediate shaft at the same time as well.

Exactly what is your intermediate shaft? (This is my first 4X4 vehicle, still learning.)

    Thank you!

The intermediate shaft goes from the CV on the right side to the diff
They ( the Intermediate Shaft ) has splines in it to match the splines on the CV
    They wear out over time
If you replace one without the other the worn splines wear out the new spines
One reason I keep 4-6 (intermediate shafts ) in stock at all times , many times when a strange noise/ vibrations or replacing a CV the customer needs one

Thank you Tomm. When I googled it I was getting conflicting answers. I saw images of a front diff shaft, and a steering rack part.

does anyone know where I can find an intermediate shaft for the KJ? Or does anyone have a part # for one they trust?

Makes sure to grease that thing well. I replaced my original intermediate shaft in 2009 and greased it well. Took it off a few weeks ago and it was still in like new condition, pumped it full of grease again.

Terrible design if you ask me. Should've just made it one piece. Or made it where the cv's bolt on.

Nothing at all wrong with design really, people just never replace them when changing out a CV

How many miles have you driven your KJ since 2009 Jeepster ?

It was a while ago now, but picked mine up on Amazon (crown brand) and it was about 20 cheaper if I'm remembering correctly.

Went back and looked, I was off a year. Bought the cv from napa on 5/11/2010 and the Jeep only had 48,164 miles. Jeep now has 117k on it, so its lasted longer than the original did and the splines sill look perfect. I couldn't get the original cv/shaft apart so I had to turn it all in as a core.

Thats why I say its a bad design, that shouldve lasted longer..

Mine lasted about 120k or 130k. I just replaced it when doing the CVs.

Always one or two things go bad early
My 04, rear ujoint was rusted in place before I had 50,000 miles on it , it should of lasted longer as well
Replaced with greaseable and still in there at 235,000 miles
1976 Ford pickup bought new, had less than 11,000 miles on it and left front coil spring broke
Many of the new vehicles I bought over the years had little things break or worn out before their time
