Installing winch

I have 2002 KJ, I have 8000lb. Winch. Has anyone installed winch to stock bumper?

Thanks picture is great incentive for me to install starting tomorrow. I have mounting plate and everything. Just got to drill holes,man this forum is fantastic I am proud to be a member, Thanks brother

You need something like the Backbone to install or a real bumper like ARB
The backbone is a full " bracket" in behind the stock bumper , which is very strong and well built
You can not see it in the pictures of course .
I've installed a couple of them and there " were " very well engineered
Just drill some holes and mounting a plate will never be strong enough

Right, those runners go into the frame holes pretty much as far as they can go. And it's all tied together under the plate the winch mounts on (like even behind the licence plate part of the bumper). Could maybe start fabbing with some square hitch tubing?

Thanks don't want it to be weak. I believe I might can fabricate it to be strong and look decent, but just in case where can I get the backbone.. I am waiting on my JBA uca so I have time

Have you removed the bumper cover yet?
If not remove it and look over what you have .
There a few ways you can do it to make it good and strong
The trick is if you want to retain the stock bumper or not

No sir I have not removed the cover, had plans to do it but lightening storms have other ideas..it is really not important to keep stock bumper but, I am putting money in suspension and running gear. How much in ballpark figures is the alternative to keeping stock. I would love to put bad *** bumper on jeep I have worked so *******

Best bumper out there for a KJ is the ARB
Cost some coins but very durable and holds a winch.
Good and strong
You mention suspension, do it right with OME springs and either OME or Bilstein shocks
If you serious about winch etc go 790 front springs and 948 rear from OME
Running gear, if going to larger tires like 31s/32s then a regear to 4.10s is in order then as well
4.10s are as low as you can go in the D30a up front

How did they mount it
How many bolts hold it on to frame and across the front crossmember
If its not like the ARB mount, I'd be concerned

Nate put square metal tubing into the frame and welded reenforced quarter inch plate as the mounting plate to the 2 square tubes. he used 4 grade 8 bolts per side to hold the tube in place.

If you truly want a strong bumper needs to be mounted better than just that
For example ARB mounting bracket has 6 total mounting bolts back in frame ends,
PLUS 5 bolts across the front of the crossmember
and that's just for the mounting bracket

The quarter inch tube and plate along with the grade 8 bolts are stronger than the tin frame. Not to mention the he welded the rest of the bumper together. He has other anchor points. So how is that weak? I am genuinely confused!

With what you said it would be
now you are adding he has other anchor points
Like I said from your first statement it would be weak , as ARB and even detours winch mount mounts way stronger than your first statement

Sorry I have taken a while to reply been working trying to buy more liberty parts. LOL
