I owned a 2004 Liberty and loved it. I bought it new with a factory installed tow package, and used it for daily driving and towing a 3500 pound boat.

I am looking at low mileage used Liberty's but Jeep/Chrysler/FNC VIN lookup tools do not work on older vehicles and FNC customer care cannot help. I know the factory tow package came with at least these visible features: class III hitch, 7-pin wiring hookup and clutch driven mechanical cooling fan with special shroud.

Obviously I can verify the hitch and wiring hookup, but it is possible someone could install that without it being factory installed. The extra cooling provided by the the clutch driven mechanical cooling fan is crucial, but I don't know what to look for. I never compared mine to one without on my old Liberty.

Can anyone help me identify the clutch driven mechanical cooling fan, or any other feature that would guarantee I am looking at a factory installed tow package?

The HD fan, 7 pin adapter, and hitch are it. You’re right that these items can be added after the fact. The HD fan is usually a giveaway that the Jeep had the tow package originally. It’s the white plastic fan you can see here under the coolant tank, and is connected to the water pump on the front of the engine. Forward of that, up against the radiator, is an electric fan that came on all KK’s. But the HD fan was only with the tow package.

Thanks so much lfhoward

I am not that familiar with the newer Liberty's fan set up. I am looking at this Liberty from a private seller and asked for detailed pictures.

I think I see the fan but I only see a 4-pin, not 7-pin, trailer harness. What's your opinion: factory install or not?

I think I can see light between the water pump axis and the radiator, so no HD fan. The 4 pin and Mopar hitch could have been added by the dealer, but it’s not a tow package. But, if you like everything else about it, you could always add the fan and 7 pin yourself. Mine came the same way as the photos. Added the HD fan and a transmission cooler and I tow a 3000# trailer (with surge brakes on it) regularly with no issues. Oh, another item that came with tow package KK’s was a full size spare. You can replace that doughnut spare with a full size one too, if you like. Never tow on the doughnut.

Thanks for all the great information. Not sure I want to retrofit a used vehicle I just bought, but it's good to know that's an option

I’ve owned an ‘06 Limited since new with every factory up-trim options. I was always under the impression that a ****** cooler (in addition to hitch & wiring) was the “tow package.” It’s altogether rated for 5,000lb capacity.

All the KK’s came with the transmission cooler, both with and without the tow package. It’s part of the radiator assembly.
