how much wieght is to much?

My new cherokee is here. Talk about a loaded down Jeep Liberty.

I took a u-haul dolley behind the Libby to pick this up. When I left my house I had my dog, my buddy, a ALL CAST IRON trans and tcase (np435/205 combo) a 33" tire, 4 10" wide wheels and an air tank to air the tires up on the xj with.

I drove 3 hours like that.

Got to the Sear's resi, and loaded the xj up. After getting the title taken care off I took off to Cleveland. It took approx 1hr to get there.

I stopped and purchased a Liberty ift kit and tossed it the xj. I then met 86ford where he took the trans/tcase combo, and swapped me a set of wheels for the wheels I had, and also sent me with another 5 tires and wheels. we piled it all into the XJ.

I left Cleveland drove another 1.5hr and picked up a FSJ dana 44 and put it inside the xj. I hit i-77 from there and set the cruise control to 75mph.

Liberty handled it really well and the hydro brakes on the dolley helped slowing it down really well.
It was a right ride sitting on the bump stops though

Jeepster......I think he meant "lift" kit.

offroadohio......nice xj, but now that you used it as a utility trailer, what do you plan next?? Looks like you were a "little" overloaded. If you did any damage to the KJ during the tow (like overheating the ******) your ****** would start slipping so you would know about it already. You should be ok if you took it easy and used the o/d lockout where necessary. You were probably way over 5,000 lbs easy though.

I wieghed in at around 4800. My door tag sasy GVWR is 5530 it towed it like ti wasnt back there aside from the driveline vibe I got becuase of the rear squat. But I now have my lift with stiffer rear coils so that might help it out.


I have an aftermarket trans temp guage becuase I drag stuff with this all the time. I flat towed my little geo tracker all over the eastcoast earlier this year.

With this load I ran with o/d on and with the cruise set to 80. Trans temp never went above its normal temp, nor did the engine temp, and I managed around 15mpg, vs the 20mpg I get on average on normal driving.

It has 40k on the clock now and the transfluid is starting to show signts of wear, going to change it at ym next oil change (1,000 more miles)


As for the cherokee it is getting built so I can keep the liberty on the street more.

What does the trans temp run?

Care to tells us how and where the gauge is mounted?

Mine runs about 190 under a load. Normal is around 180. I think 160-200 is "normal" according to chrysler. I've ghad ti near 200 before but never over. Not sure when the warning light kicks on, as I havent seen it yet.

I just have an autometer temp guage I got from autozone. I think it was around 40 bucks. It is hooked into the trans fluid return line comming out of the trans cooler, and I have it mounted right below the guage cluster on the RH side of the steering wheel.

Curious, shouldnt it be hooked to the intake side of the cooler?
