Hello,

I have a Jeep Liberty 2002 3.7L Automatic with a shifter on the console for 4Hi and 4 Lo . I went to a shop and they said there is no oil in the transfer case. They also said it was leaking from a pinion seal. When the car is driven there is no unusual sound except when you put it into 4HI or 4 LO. They said the transfer case needs to be replaced, because in 4HI or 4LO there is this awful grinding noise. Does this make sense to replace this transfer case? Also if they do replace it and there is still some grind in 4HI or 4LO what else could be wrong? My transfer case by the way is the Command Trac 231.

Thanks,
Jack

Sounds like a smoked bearing. There is a guy who has 2 transfer cases for sale on this board.

No one wants an Ollie Freder t case (grind a pound for me). I'm sure it will fix it if it only happens when using the t case but check the front prop shaft. Oh and get all your fluids checked.
