I heard that the winch they use on the Land Rover G4 Challenge is designed so that when it snaps it just drops down, instead of flying all over the place cutting peoples legs off.

Anyone knows how this works?

From The Land Rover Web Site:
The Expeditionware Winch Line is a hybrid design that is composed of a 75' long outer section of silver-colored AmSteel-Blue for maximum strength and resilience that is expertly spliced to a 25' long inner section of TECHNORA for maximum resistance to the heat that can be generated by planetary winches. A yellow safety hook is large enough to fit almost all recovery points and features a spring-loaded safety clasp that prevents inadvertent unlatching. A powdercoated steel tube thimble and red cordura chafe guard minimize wear and abrasion to the Winch Line during heavy use. A marine-grade ring terminal end makes the EW Winch Line suitable for use with winches of all makes. The red color of the TECHNORA and the cordura chafe guard give the user warning that he is reaching the usable limits of the Winch Line. The Expeditionware Winch Line maximizes the advantages of the synthetic winch line while minimizing its disadvantages.
