Whats up everyone,

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7 V6 and well my engine finally gave out on me. Now instead of actually rebuilding the engine, I rather just swap in a new engine and get it done.

Here is my question:

- I want to know if the 2005 Dodge Ram 3.7 V6 fits my 2002 KJ?

- I want to know if a 2006-2008 Jeep Commander 3.7 V6 fits my 2002 Jeep Liberty?

- I want to know if a Dodge Durango 3.7 V6 fits my 2002 Jeep Liberty?

If anyone knows if they do or if there is a difference, I would greatly appreciate it. I am planning to use the same transmission on my KJ so I want to just swap in the motor and bolt on MY transmission.

Thanks and look foward to hearing what you guys know.

I'm not sure the 3.7 Durango were the 545RFE. I think they were 42RLE.

Ding ding ding, HoosierJeeper is the winner.
The 2002 KJ is the only 3.7 powered Mopar to have a 45 or 545RFE.

Dakota's with the 3.7 are 42RLE as well, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Also...not sure if the electronics will work, but a 3.7 from a Nitro would work.

The 2002 jeep engines are NOT the same as the 04+ engines.

You CANNOT use a newer engine in a 2002 liberty.

You can only use a 2002-2003 3.7 from either a liberty, ram truck, or possiby a dakota.

The reluctor wheel inside the engine on the crankshaft is different and you will not be able to get the computer to set the timing....it will crank and never run.

Do Nitros have 45 or 545RFEs? Or was that only the '02 Nitros?

Ram truck has 42RLE with the 3.7 ITBJRC. Go figure.

Dodge Nitro...oh damn forgot this was for an 02 KJ. Never mind.:)

I'm 99% sure the 3.7 Ram was 42RLE. I'll check DT.

Like I said.
Remaned longblock. Less hassle, you know it'll work, no big changes just go get it to work.

I got experience with engine replacement in a Libby. I've had mine done. haha

Writing a check ain't much experience.

A 5.7L hemi shoe horned in a libby is one way to go....

You must be registered for see images
While that would be all sorts of fun, a 4.7 swap would be a helluva lot more feasible (same engine family).

I did the swap myself on my 2002 liberty. I did plenty of research on what engines will work because I really just wanted a used engine that would get the jeep going with the least amount of work.

on a used motor, you get all the sensors, intake, exhaust manifolds, motor mounts, injectors, fuel rail, etc.

My engine had overheated and somehow ran out of oil at the same time (woman driver)...I bought it used and was not sure of the condition of the other parts of the engine so a used swap made the best sense.

As for the transmissions being different...don't focus your attention on what model the transmission is...I think either trans will bolt to the engine..it is the computer that is different.

I have read somewhere on a forum where a guy put a 2004 motor in his 2002 and it would not start and I googled and found a guy on craigslist with a 2005 motor really cheap because it didn't work in his 2002.
