I've been buying alot of liberties with bad motors. finding totalled ones with good motors is a problem, rebuilding doesn't seem to be.
I have the skills and experience to rebuild an engine. I've built many 4.0's and buick 3800s, so this is not a problem. I have the tools to do everything but machine work.
So.
What I'm looking for is this;
What did it cost to get your engine bored?
What did getting it "tanked" (dipped) cost?
What did getting it checked cost?
What did getting your crank turned down cost?
I don't care about getting heads rebuilt. I've got the proper tools to lap valves, blast and dip the heads, and pressure check. Just nothing big enough to deal with the engine. Also don't plan on spending money on having balance shaft bearings put in, as I have the necessary tools to do that myself.
I don't want to know what it cost you to have a mechanic rebuild it, pull it, and/or install it. I'm the mechanic, I'm the one doing the work. The cost is my time, electric, material.
Really the goal of this thread is to get an idea of what the average cost of machine work is. Already priced out parts, and those are reasonable.
What my thinking is from past experience is that I'd have around $300 into a good block machined and ready to go, with a good crank out of the deal.
Unless there's spun rod bearings, I shouldn't need new connecting rods, but will need bolts as they are not reusable
If my thinking is correct, a good engine can be built for just about $1000, labor not included in assembly or disassembly, or install or removal of the engine, and not including buying good heads if mine are shot.
