2008 Jeep Liberty Distribution Box Question

For the masses,

is this component inside the distribution box necessary or can it/should it be removed for better airflow?

I've replaced the distribution box in my Jeep before. That white plastic is part of the hinge that opens and closes the main mode door. Just above your red arrow you can see the flat black plastic door/flap, and the white plastic is part of the hinge, I believe. It has been a minute since I did this job, but I don't think that white part should be removed.
