Good morning, All.

This is my second liberty acquired in the last 8 months or so. The first was a replacement vehicle for the cabin which turned out to be a lot more fun to repair and prepare than expected.

This one is a 2006 Liberty Renegade, 3.7L Automatic with 178k km or 110k miles. It has an OME/Bilstein 2.5” lift with JBA front UCAs. Tires as of yesterday are 235/85r16 10 ply Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 including the spare.

It is rust free and runs pretty well, I’ve been driving it on and off for a few months now and it’s been completely reliable.

I’ve started with all the built up maintenance and such to get it back to a healthy baseline:

- Engine Radiator (Denso), Water Pump (Dayco), Rad Hoses and 180° thermostat and new housing
- Seafoam engine oil treatment with a Semi-Synthetic 15w40 (Phillips 66 Guardol ECT) diesel oil change interval to get the internals cleaned up
- Transmission service with Mobil ATF+4 and a hard reset to force a recalibration
- Replaced the A/C compressor, accumulator and condensor (Denso) to get the comfort level back to where we’d all like it to be
- Replaced Lower Control Arm to chassis, LCA to strut bushings, Lower ball joints, descale and paint LCAs and steering knuckles black
- Replaced factory driving lights with Earth Tracks euro-beam LED Worklights

Planned and Completed Improvements:
- Replaced factory electric fan with Flex-A-Lite Wave Flex LoBoy 16” 3000 cfm fan, installed into original fan shroud/support (Completed)
- Add transmission and cooling system fan control circuits to bypass and lower the factory fan cut in point (~219°f) to a more reasonable 200°f cut in/185° cut out
- Install 235/85r16 Geolandar M/Ts (Completed)
- Install Spartan locker and ARB Diff cover into/onto rear axle (Today)
- Fabricate tubular adjustable rear axle LCAs and upper wishbone using Barnes4WD Enduro Links and 2”x2”x1/4” wall square steel tubing (Parts due to arrive tomorrow)
- Fabricate steel rock sliders, front and rear bumpers and install Tabor 9K winch (Winch on hand)
- Replace front IFS Differential with Ford 8.8 or similar, undecided. Will drop front subframe an inch or so at this time. I might try to find an early cast iron D30 but they don’t seem very common.

@derekj You betcha.

Front suspension bushings replaced and 235/85r16 Geolandar MTs test fitted on Saturday.

How hard is it to find a cast iron Dana 30 IFS front diff? I think early 2002 only?

Looks great. I have a 2002 built in 2001 and it has the aluminum Dana 30A IFS differential. I am going to guess if there was an iron one, they are a unicorn. I did put an Eaton e-locker in mine and so far is working fine, but I do not shock load it and only engage it when needed going uphill and over rocks, in loose sand etc...

I like the tall skinny tire setup - looks good - it's what I run on my Jeep.

Really! All I’ve read is how fragile the front diff is, but maybe it’s just not great and it’s more of a bushing wear issue that causes the case failure?

I am sure the steel cases are stronger but no longer available from JBA. I do not think any of the ones for other brands are an easy conversion. Most people probably break them "sending it" instead "crawling it" over obstacles. I have not done a lot of hard use since I installed it, mostly one day at Moonrocks "Reno, NV" in June.

Maybe one day I’ll find a used steel housing kicking around.

In the meantime, RockAuto.com has these:

I am still running the stock CV axles with a 3" lift. I have seen those CV axles for lifted vehicles at Oreillys and other parts stores. They are much more expensive, but probably will not bind and fail when fully extended and turned at the same time.
