So I have been wanting to replace my fuel filter for quite a while. I watched a bunch of videos and looked through the FSM for tips and how to steps.

Of course, my KJ does not have the access port; so that means I get to drop the tank. In the process of dropping the tank, I do not see the fuel filter where it is supposed to be according to the FSM. Finally, get the thing disconnected and all the way down. What I have does not match up with the FSM.

I have looked through quite a few forums, but I have not seen anyone post about the same circumstances that I'm in. Is my fuel filter located inside the tank? Do I need a new tank if I want to add the factory fuel filter? Do I need a new sending unit in order to make this work? Is there a comparable aftermarket solution that I can Jerry rig to add a filter?

I will be instaling new injectors also, and I would hate to put in new parts without having a filter in the system.

I also found there is no fuel filter on my 04 as stated in the manual , I had purchased a filter per rockauto or some other site but returned it since it did not exist, no problems without one so I just let it be. Tank was very clean inside even after 200k miles.

Interesting, Ive always assumed my 04 had the fuel filter like Ive always read about.

What year Jeep are you working on xyzvq? I thought all KJ's had the access port in the cargo area.

I have an 04, and the parts jeep that is in my driveway is an 04 also.

My research from watching videos online and forums is that 02-03s have the access port and fuel filter. I have yet to find an 04 with the access port and fuel filter like in the FSM.

My plan is to head up to the junkyard and pull an 02-03 gas tank and upgrade to run the new fuel filter that I bought. The 04 tank is missing the indentation and mounting hardware for the fuel filter.

So the first jeep that I crawled under at the junk yard had a couple of holes drilled in the tank. I immediately realized that they drill holes in all the gas tanks when they get the cars. I guess otherwise, the first idiot that smokes a cigaret near an open tank blows the whole place up. Nonethe less, I walked out of there with some fancy door panels that I’ll outfit the KJ with.

I was also able to confirm that all 04s come without the fuel filter attached to the outside of the tank. So, since the 04 FSM is incorrect, I decided to find the FSM for an 05. In that FSM it states that the fuel filter is part of the submerged fuel pump in the tank. I guess Jeep just didn’t update the 04 FSM.

So, with that being the case, I think I’m going to have to try and sell the Crown filter that I bought on eBay since it’s been too long since I bought it in preparation for this job. Unless any other 04+ owners have any recommendations, I guess I’ll just live with the fuel filter being part of the pump and move on to my other Jeep projects.

Hello,
I'm opening back this thread.
My fuel gauge is not working anymore, i suspect the gauge sensor inside the fuel pump.

As you, I've a 2004, it seems that i do not have the fuel filter.
So I assume that my fuel pump is the same than a 2005.

Can someone confirm that before I buy one.
And to you recommand a brand? does the cheap fuel pump why can found on amazon are good?

Our fuel pump has a "sock" or screen that wraps around the inlet tube of the fuel pump. This is the only thing that I saw resembling a filter when I opened up my tank.

I ordered this part "Delphi FG1222 Fuel Module" on amazon. It's been working great ever since install. The tricky part about getting it installed is having to swap the fittings on the two hoses. The two fittings that it comes with are wrong for the '04. I heated up my old one to pull off the originals, and did the same to the new pump. Then, I heated up the new hoses and pushed my fittings on. This was a very "fun" process.

Hello guys,

I've some update with my KJ.
I removed the fuel pump and it's clearly not the same than '02-03 or afer '05.
The right one for the '04 is the Delphi FG1352-11B1 or equivalent.
Unfortunately it doesn't comes with the fuel gauge, which is the part I need.

So I'll certainly buy a complete '03 fuel pump to take the sensor because it have the same design.

Cheers.
