Final update on the lil ol' KJ - she's dead, Jim. Frame rails were extremely soft and rotten. It left on a flatbed this morning for the crusher. RIP, little one. 190k miles in the north will kill 'em over time.
Went out and looked at my ‘02. It appears the TCM stays on the black panel it’s mounted on until the whole assembly is removed by taking two nuts off in the front of the black panel. You’ll see two studs at the front where the nuts are.

Either change the u-joints or find a shop to do it. Make sure the new ones have zerk fittings to be greased. Probably why the current ones are screaming - no lube.
^ Make sure it gets taken off in the winter. Got one of those in the garage with several split tubes from freezing water expansion. It’s going out with the scrap iron soon.
Got a heat gun? It’ll soften the gaskets.
Re: your cylinder conditions - I’d be a while lot more worried about #6! That’s a lot of gunk buildup. Like maybe a water leak from the head gasket into it.

I *may* have saved the Liberty battery! Stuck it on the Optimate charger before the long weekend and walked away. Went and checked it today and 12.6v! Hmm…. Load tested it by putting it back in and it’s started the Jeep three times today.
