    01 Liberty Won't Start

On mine, there is only power on this fuse when either the engine is running or the motor is cranking. I think thats the idea, that the power is off to all the sensors, injectors etc when the engine is off and ignition on. You need long arms or a friend to help you test it. In any case you said...

    01 Liberty Won't Start

'I checked the coils, all have spark. The spark plugs are new, less than 100kms on them. There is fuel, I put in $20 the day before and only drove about 15kms. I did a compression test on cyl 2, 4 and 6 as this is the side the codes are pointing to. Cyl 2 - 150 Cyl 4 - 135 Cyl 6 - 140' Sounds...

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

An excellent question! I can only speculate but I'll have a go. There were 3 things I think were contributing 1. The lifters were gummed up, so the retaining spring was not doing its job when the engine was switched off 2. There was water in the oil from HGF and there was even creamy oil inside...

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

Just wanted to close this thread off from my input. The car started today! It has skimmed and cleaned heads, new aftermarket lifters and a DNJ head gasket kit fitted. Thats a MLS gasket if you're interested. Plus new head bolts. I changed the oil and filter and got as much of the old creamy...

    Rocker arms

I'm new to Jeep so you may well be right, we'll see over time. Replacing rockers isn't that big of a job, getting the covers off is the hard bit and its not that hard. I see it more like replacing your worn out socks and keeping your perfectly good shoes!

    I meant lifters!

    Rocker arms

I've been playing with rockers this weekend so let me share my experience and you can make your own mind up. Mines a 2004 3.7, but may be a later engine I'm not sure, can't find an engine number anywhere. I had a HGF and 3 (yup, amazed the engine wasn't destroyed!) rockers thrown off 3...

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

That's piston 2, I'm hoping this water in the engine hasn't created any long term issue. Fingers crossed!

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

Yep, really I should be messing with a land rover defender but they cost 10 times as much for 10x less!

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

A bit of new information, I just tested the thermostat with boiling water and it is stuck shut. Now, that'll create an overheat, blow the head gasket, put water in the oil and mess up the lifters causing the rockers to jump out of place. It's a theory!

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

Thanks for this Dadosix, I don't think I have the choice of Jeep parts here in the UK that some of you guys get. This engine and car are relatively rare in the UK so I have made a choice on what's available. We'll see how I get on.

No question on HG, I'll be googling Marvell mystery oil!

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

Hi Big Al, I've ordered a rebuild kit from a local supplier via ebay. Will post pics and details when I get them. If I don't like them I'll send it back. Yes to new bolts, they were £60 for a set, ridiculous, but with the bits that are deep in the engine I don't want to do them twice so not...

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

Some pictures of the block with heads off. Its dirty all right but piston tops look OK and bores look fine behind the dirt. I'll give it a clean up before the heads go on and take some more pictures. Is there a thread somewhere discussing the pro and cons of head gasket types/brands for this...

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

Thanks for the info on the rockers / fulcrums. I will have a look at all of them just to be sure. The good news from today is that (on first inspection) the pistons look good, the bores look fine and the cylinder heads look ok. See pics, I'll post more if you're interested. Maybe this engine...

Jeep Cherokee / Liberty 2004 3.7 Crank but no Start

I think the next step is to get the heads off, probably do that tomorrow and hopefully that'll be as deep as I need to go. I'll post some pictures when its done. Then put it together replacing only bits that need replacing. I might still be able to get it running for under a £1000.

Excellent suggestions DadoSix and BigAl. I hope Dad o' six, thats Jeeps and not kids! Had a bit of a revelation today pulling the LH rocker cover off. 2 more rockers lying comfortably in the oil. So that'll be 3 pistons with valves stuck shut. I'm guessing thats the problem! I need a few...
