I know this is an old thread but found a part for those interested. Slip Fit Front Bar Fitting 3/4" x 3/4" Awning Hardware It's an adjustable T bar for 3/4" awning pipe. So EMT conduit or any 3/4" tubing could be used. They also carry a 1" version. EDIT Found a much cheaper option...
