HOW TO: Change Oil In A KJ (Video)

Motorcraft FL820S Side note on the filter. I have been using FL820S for a while now. Interesting thing is that when I did an oil change last week, the new FL820S was 3/4 of an inch shorter than the old one. I went back into my garage and compared the other new FL820S to another one I had...

    regear to 4.10's = $750???

if it includes new axle bearings and seals, along with synthetic lube, it is about right (although, still a bit high). Setting up teh 8.25 is relatively easy, as the parts are not that heavy (when compared to a 80, or Corp 14 bolt)

    Quick Help!!!

Take a look under the passenger seat, at the airbag wiring harness. See if it is chaffed or cut or damaged. Mine got cut by the seat rails and caused the NO BUS error, along with shutting the whole instrument cluster down.

What do you TOW with your KJ/KK ?

5x13 utility trailer, home-built. Uses the same size tire and wheel as the KJ, so I don't have to have a separate spare for the trailer. Trailer weighs in at 980# empty. It has had pretty much everything conceivable on it...wood, lumber, dirt, quads, parts, furniture, leaves, steel, tools...

    Torque Converter/Clutch Problems??

you have torque converter shudder. Does it do it if you have OD locked out? How many miles are on the trans? Is the fluid burnt? The Trans has many clutches (frictions) and steels. So, if the shop quoted you "replace clutch", that does not make sense. Also, did teh shop take it for a...

Jen and I are looking into buying a...

some other tips with trailering. In the heat of summer, and heavy loads, bumping up to 89 octane will help. Smooth easy starts are key to keeping the trans happy, as is smooth decel. Other drivers will do everything they can to pull around, in front, on the side and maybe under you. For...

Jen and I are looking into buying a...

along with overall weight, you have to consider frontal area. I do not remember what the max recommended frontal area is for the KJ. I routinely tow 6k with the KJ, but that is short distances (<25 miles), and it is logs, so the load is low and balanced. With all loads, you have to know how...

    A Non-Controversial Oil Question

the Rotella Synthetic I use comes in 1qt, 4qt, and 5 gal. that i have seen. Don't really mind the exta quarts, as it comes in handy for the lawnmower. Price varies greatly between stores. I use the same in all ic engines simply to reduce the number of containers I have around.

Steering wheel vibration exactly at 60mph

If it started at 75 mph, and working it's way down, and it is in the steering wheel, I would say tire balance. As a tire looses tread, teh balance will change.

    exhaust??

SpinTech muffler I have been using SpinTech mufflers for years on all of my vehicles (except my diesel..straight pipe). The one I cut into the liberty has a very deep, distintive note. Sounds very much like my old baja boat that had the wet manifolds with the sbc 383. Cost a total of $100...

    I want a Locker!!!

If you really intend to keep the vehicle, save a bit more money, and put a real locker in it. I have the detroit TrueTrac in teh rear of my 05, and while is is worlds above an open diff and clutch type lsd, it still is worlds behind the Detroit NoSpin. My 02 KJ had a Powertrax lunchbox...

    Yikes!!

I refuse to take mine in for the recalls.. My 02 KJ was previously owned by my Dad, who took it in for two ball joint recalls, and twice more in between the recalls for additional ball joints. Four sets of crap factory ball joints, each with about 5000 miles on them, and they would not pass...

    42rle

My 05 with the 42RLE has had a trailer (usually around 2k) hooked to it for 80k miles, no issues with the trans. Knowing how to manipulate the OD lockout and keeping the tc locked is key to making it live long.

    can build sheet be wrong??

build sheets are commonly wrong. What ever seems to be laying around is what is put in. I had a 1995 chevy c1500 that had more c2500 parts on it than 1500 parts, even though the build sheet said otherwise. It was a real PITA the first couple of times I went to get parts for a c1500 and...

So I have a 2wd 07 KJ and was reading about lockers...

well worth it. I have an 05 Rocky Mtn Ed, and put a True Track in at 200 miles...best thing I have done on it to date. I have always run full Detroit Lockers in everything I have owned, even my 78 Impala, but decided to give the True trac a shot. It is seamless back there. I hve one for the...

    Rear differential problems

Fear not about any damage. Every time you make a turn with any type of clutch-LSD, it is wearing out. The chattering you were feeling was the clutches not slipping, which is tougher on other driveline components, but better for the LSD. Most LSD carriers are smoked or getting smoked by 50k...

dropped a grand at dealership on brake and transfer case job

It it the type of brake pad material. Brake pads require a certain amount of heat to grab. Typically, the "high-performace" brake pads, or ones designed for severe use, suchy as towing or racing, require more heat to get to the grab point. This is so they will have a decent service life. The...
