I have a 2005 Kj with the part time 4x4 high. When I switch into 4high I have no issues but to put it into 2high I have to reverse a bit before 4wd disengages. Is this normal?

While rolling slowly.
I usually don't have to be moving to change modes. I'm convinced it's related to me having a stick shift. with the clutch in the drive line is decoupled and has the ability to move just enough as needed. Hence why I suggested shifting the transmission into neutral. probably should have also said foot off the brake as well.

Did you do this while the car in movement? This is the best option! If you do it while car is not running, you will have to put reverse do that it can disengage.
