4WD lever not working

As per title. We are sub zero here in the UK. I put my KJ in to full time 4WD to drive home from the pub last night. Bit of a thaw today and went to put it back into 2WD and the lever moves but feels like it is not connected to anything. Its too cold and wet to go crawling underneath today to look. Does it have a cable or a control rod and how easy is it to sort. Thankfully its not stuck in part time or low range. It may take a few days to sort, and this weather is set in for a bit, we are looking at -9c/15f on Wednesday. Am I ok doing my usual journeys in 4 full time?

Mine is an export 05 CRD. '5-Spd Automatic 545RFE Transmission' with 'selec trac full time 4wd' is what it says on the build sheet. To be honest I dont know what that means in the grand scheme of things! I have a 5 position lever - 2wd/4PT/4FT/N/4L. If this is the same as your 05 I will crack on and order the white bushing.

Yes the autos have a center diff, the manual doesn't. So you can stay in 4wd and pretend that you a Range rover!

They all do if talking about the transfer case

Am I right in understanding that a temporary fix can be done with a zip tie / cable tie (dunno what you call them in the US)

Hmm, I don't think the manuals take kindly to being driven in 4wd on hard surfaces, they have the NV231, at least the UK ones do, not sure what you got in yours.

OH DEAR , OH WELL
I am fully aware to what they have but the statement made was autos have a center diff while manuals do not
Must be in the bad translation of the English language LOL

The transmission has nothing to do with it. It all depends on whether the transfer case has the full time 4x4 option. I have the 2006 3.7 L with automatic transmission and I don't have the selec trac full time 4x4.

Getting back on track .... It's not the transfer case linkage that has disengaged, went underneath today armed with bits to do a fix and that end is all fine. So it must be the front. Is this a real pig of a job and what does it involve?

Id start by unbolting and removing the center console, as thats where a majority of what your looking for related to the lever is hidden.

I don't know about the linkage/cable but you are ok driving in 4 full time. Fuel mileage may suffer.

I've tried to put the transfer box back into 2WD from underneath but I can't get the lever to move. I even tied a length of rope to it and gave it a good tug and no go. Can the lever mechanism inside the box seize? are there any inherent problems here?
