I was driving down to Walmart and noticed a plume of smoke behind me, so I pulled over to investigate, I get under the rear of the car and it’s drenched in an oily substance, I see dripping from the front of the vehicle so I get up front and look underneath to see that the rubber hose has come off of the metal transmission line, I shoved it back on and secured it as best I could, then I limped my jeep probably 4-500ft to a fire station where I was able to call a tow, my question is, how badly did I potentially mess up my transmission, it was slipping so bad and didn’t want to accelerate at all, I kept it around 5mph but should I be good if I just refill the fluid? Edit: The circled line is the line that came off.

You were at speed when all the smoke started, and then slipping.
I would want to drop the transmission pan inspect for particulate matter, change filter & then re-fill with ATF+4 only.
What year is your KJ?

I was speed when the hose came off, but I wasn’t on the gas I was coasting, the smoke was from the fluid spraying onto the exhaust, I pulled over immediately, realized what had happened and then limped to the spot I parked it at for the tow truck, the slipping was after I stopped and secured the hose back on, I maybe achieved a top speed of 5-7 mph while moving it to the parking lot area, it was maybe 500ft away

Is your 2006 KJ an automatic 42RLE transmission? When was the last time the transmission was serviced with new ATF+4 filter & fluid?
It should have the transmission dipstick and follow procedures for refill/ capacities. Do not over fill.
If automatic see page 4769, you can refer to the complete 2006 factory service manual here: http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/2006-KJ-SM.pdf

I would fill it to the proper level and run a little before I dropped the pan. Your slipping was likely due to a low fluid level.

Did you add the rubber hose that came off to deal with the leaking original trans cooler lines? I think I would want double clamps on there and check both sides. I am watching my original hose and deciding when to cut out the steep ends and do the same.

There are a couple threads and youtubes showing that as a solution, but having yours blow off makes me think it might be better to go through the paid of getting new OEM lines and going through all the trouble routing them

The previous owner must’ve done it, tbh I thought it was factory, I plan to fill it up this morning and see how it’s running, what are the full levels and how do I check the level on the dipstick, do I have the have the vehicle in gear to check? Also the reason it probably blew off was because it was barely clamped, I was able to slide it back on, clamp and all without loosening the hose clamp one bit, when I got it home I double clamped it and now it seems to be almost impossible to pull off

Update!!! Dropped the pan checked for shavings, didn’t find anything alarming, replaced the filter, replaced fluid, she seems to be operating perfectly now if not better than before

This is might be what the the prior owner did and you can see what it looked like prior to the "fix".
