hello ppl.. well i have a 02 jeep liberty 3.7l v6 and it started making a knocking sound.. ive got it tore down to the block (while its still in the jeep) and so far ive only found broke timing chain guides.. anyways ive done alot of performance upgrades like cold air intake, hotter coils, better injectors, hollowed out both cats/ deleted the 3rd, installed a 12inch glass pack. love the sound of it, bored out the throttle body for better flow. had a performance chip but sent it back because it really didnt do anything. installed slotted & drilled rotors and better pads, really want to put discs on back to can the drums but thats another later job. but after all that she started to really open up more. but was wanting to do some better performance upgrades internally since shes mostly in pieces. can i use earlier model 3.7l cams in my 02?. i assume id have to use my cam gears from the 02. but wanting a better cam without using aftermarket. instead using newer model cams from the 3.7ls. dont really have alot of money so figured i could find cams from a junk yard but earlier year.. thanks.

Custom ground cams would be it, not cheap
CAI is not a performance option nor is hollowing out the cats
The stock air box with a paper filter like from NAPA has been found in many tests to flow way better than any CAI
Cost a lot for custom pistons, cams, reworked computer etc
Drilled and slotted rotors are usually frowned upon in a 4x4 since the slots/ holes will fill with dirt/ mud / debris
You could pickup some disc brakes and sway over but remember line pressure is different so new master cylinder etc will be needed

bro mines just 2whl dr.. and yes cai and hollowed out cats are performance mods.. exuast flows better and breaths better with cai.. the stock breather box is so restrictive not to mention a silencer compartment wich is a waste of plastic.. and i do believe i can run newer model cams just was curious if anybody has done it.. but i appreciate the response but go spread the manuer on somebody elses lawn..

Hmmm, he’s not listening @tommudd

IME, all that a CAI does is allow the engine to ingest more dirt due to less filtering being accomplished. K&N and their kin work great on race motors that are rebuilt every third or fourth pass. Not as well on every day use engines.

Using other engine’s cams? Unless you understand cam design and can determine compatibility (99.9% probability none compatible), pay someone to design and make some for you. Hooe you have a real fat wallet. :)

Oh, if you get that far into it, realize you’ll need bigger injectors, better coils and a host of other parts to make it all work.

I fully suggest YOU GO somewhere else and read up on real world differences, BRO , LOL
By the way I am not your BRO
You thinking what works is totally wrong
Guess you do not realize that many of us have been building/ testing these KJs for YEARS now
Personally I have 3 KJs ,an 04 I bought new, an 03 and a 05 have driven them over 385,000 miles and tested various items as far as performance, overall power and driveabilty over the last 18 years
For example I tested various CAIs , each over a 5000 mile period . Stock box With NAPA best paper filter did better than any other of the 5 CAIs I tested. PERIOD
What may work short term on say a MUSTANG does not on a 3.7
You want more power, stick a 4.10 gear ratioed rear diff in and then report back
By the way started building drag cars/ hot rods/ 4x4s back in the early 1970s , so know just a little in how and what makes one run better

LMAO

Good Luck in your life

You'll need it with what you are trying to do to the KJ

plus since you have been building engines since you were 14 lots has changed in the last ten/twelve /fiftennyears in what can make power and what doesn't
4.10 gears in what you need and then enjoy it without much cost

It’d be cheaper to LS swap it, add a GM trans/transfer case and custom driveshafts with new super strong axles.

No you do not fully get what a difference it makes going from 3.73s to 4.10s
Much more enjoyable
and before we get another remark, answer if you've ever ridden in a 4.10 equipped KJ
If not, no need to answer since you truly do not know
and yes automatic V6 has 3.73s stock

Why 3.73s? Because they’re needed to get out of your own way.

None of my business but there is a difference between a work horse and a race horse, and I'm sorry but you don't have the race horse. Get you a camera or mustang. These guys know what they are talking about
