Hi all! I just picked up another Liberty from an auction with no key! I do have another ignition to put in it, but I can't get the old one out. Are there any special ways to pull it? I tried removing the ign lock cable, but it doesn't come all the way out and the steering wheel is locked. I can't even turn the wheel! Thanks

LOL, sorry I forgot that part, It's a 2005. I got it from an auction where the cars are mostly abandoned or towed. I also have a 2002 donor vehicle that has all the missing parts I need.

If by missing parts you're talking about the banged up front end? I regret to inform you that it all changed in 2005. You'll be able to make it work, but you'll end up changing more than you probably expected. You will end up with a 2005 that looks like a 2002‐2004 as the grill and bumper are the major differences.

Ok, its a 2005, I will now move this to the KJ General Discussion section.
The 05 factory manual is in this link & will help regarding cylinder/ignition removal. http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/
Any automotive locksmith may help to get you a key with new tumblers.

Park it on Fidelity Ave in Cleveland, Ohio. It will be gone by morning. Don't ask me how I know...

(I hope you get it out the "easy" way!) :)

I assume you're aware that the Off position is one click to the right of fully counter-clockwise, unlike my car.
It's only in the position that should come out, though worn locks sometime have an issue with the key coming out in the full c/clockwise position, which keeps Accessories powered, and flattens the battery.

On my 2004 the ignition just required some security torx bits to remove. Also note the orientation of the various springs in it, I had one fly out that I had to find on the ground, causing a brief panic. If I did it in a Trader Joe’s parking lot you can too haha… that was a long day.

Right depending on how much of the old key is sticking out. There’s a button on the key side turn the key to lock and press the button to release the key. If it’s on the blade of the old key in the lock . Long nosed pilers, grip turn to lock press button and it should come out.
As for the wheels locking nuts. Use the
Vehicle identification code number to get a new security bolt

Hmm... Have you tried contacting the Jeep service department? They may be able to 'make' you a key, if you give them the VIN (and provide proof of ownership). Somewhat of a long shot, but would save a WHOLE lot of issues/trouble..

Thanks everyone! I was able to get the security bits loose and that loosened up the wheel> Now I can get it off my tow dolly and start working on it. I was able to get the key code from the dealer and ordered a new blank key from Amazon. Just got to get it cut now. Thanks to everyone for your inputs!

Be careful…there is an airbag under the steering wheel.

Disconnect the battery so that airbags cannot go off.

You can remove the covers around the steering wheel and with a two-legged puller pull the steering wheel off its spline. You can then remove the covers surrounding the ignition switch and remove the key tumblers and the steering-lock parts.

Your new keys will need the SKEES chip fitted inside them....the Dealers should be able to program them to match the SKIMM module at the top of the column that reads the code off the ignition key!
