Another way to tell is by counting bolts on transmission pan.
45RFE had 15 bolts and the 42RLE has 13 bolts.

If the transfercase lever has "full time" on it, it's a 45RFE.
So my transfer case lever has 2H -- 4H -- N -- 4L. Is it safe to presume that I have the 45RLE?

My transmission needs to be replaced. Shop didn't even try to quote a used or rebuilt transmission. They quoted me $6k for a Jasper? Told them at that price, it wasn't an option. My engine only has 100k miles on it so I don't want to scrap it. For reference, I own a 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited with 3.7L.

The transfer case 4x4 shifter is command trac or selectrac, it is not a transmission.

The automatic transmission is either an early model 45RFE or the later model 42RLE & the best way to know is to look at your build sheet for free.
Type in your vin # here ! https://fcacommunity.force.com/RAM/s/equipment-listing

Or count the bolts around the automatic transmission PAN !!
45RFE had 15 bolts and the 42RLE has 13 bolts.

BTW when you encounter any transmission issues the FIRST thing do is: Have a transmission shop, with a good shop scanner, scan for stored codes !!
The transmissions are electronically controlled, with solenoids, clutch volume index can be read if they know how. * Some require a star scan reader.

Thanks everyone for helping to answer my question on which transmission. Shop said they didn't know which transmission as the VIN didn't specify. They asked me to count the bolts on the pan. I'm thinking they were set on selling the new Jasper transmission.

The link provided by @LibertyTC revealed the transmission as being 42RLE(DG6). <-- Not sure what the DG6 represents.

I also confirmed the bolt count on the pan as 13.

Now, I need to find a used transmission to swap. My 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited only has 100k miles on the engine so I'd like to keep it going for a few more years.

Keep in mind that between model years, wiring harness may change.
If I needed another transmission, I'd seriously consider a 2003 or 04.
Even better, get a quote with a transmission shop, that can re-build your current transmission.

I am confused, the build sheet states that my 2003 KJ 3.7 has a 42RLE auto box, however, the transmission sump pan has 15 bolts which is for a 45RFE. The sump filter is black rectangular shape.
Presumably there must be a serial number on the transmission somewhere that would identify it.

Look for a round badge on the rear of the transmission, to the left side.
