Hello again, (2002 2.5 CRD Liberty - Europe)

Fuel pump seems to be gone in my KJ, cranking not starting, and no noise/whine of pump from the rear. I can not find at all a replacement fuel pump for my model, has anyone else replaced theirs with aftermarket / universal pumps, if so which ones?

Thanks !

Sasquatch Parts has one. I was looking for a fuel pump for my gasser yesterday and stumbled upon it.

Thanks for reply both, was talking to my local jeep expert, he says I do not have a fuel pump in the rear hence why no sounds.... he thinks something else is wrong....

Your CRD didn't come with a fuel pump in the tank but it helps to add one. Jeep's original plan was to put one in but they didn't as a cost saving measure. There is already a circuit in your Jeep for the in tank pump. It includes a fuse and relay with wiring that ends under the left rear seat. An additional bit of wiring harness is needed to go between the connection under the seat and the pump. This harness piece can come from a Jeep Liberty/Cherokee but it needs to be modified. Export Libertys/Cherokees might have an access panel above the fuel tank in the cargo area. No access panel in US versions, the tank has to be dropped.

The fuel line quick-connectors are designed to seal under pressure. Without the in-tank pump air gets sucked into the fuel lines at the connectors causing no-start or stumbling problems. You can bleed air out of the system using the pump and bleed *s*c*rew* at the fuel filter under the hood. US and export fuel filters are different but there should be a pump and bleed ***** on both.

Sasquatch makes a kit with everything needed but it's expensive. The LOSTJEEPS forum has a lot of information on this CRD problem and others.

Fuel pumps:
* Dodge 3500 Cummins #5143160AA
* Airtex #E7181M
* Spectra Premium #SP7181

Terminals:
* Apex 2.8mm terminals
female #54001800 (2 needed)
male #54001801 (1 needed)
tool #5400

Sorry to interrupt, good info though. This message is for turblediesel, I have noticed you have helped others get messages to lost jeeps for account activations. Could you please ask a lost jeeps moderator to active user name aviator97? Thanks.

My CRD would stall out and go into a limp home mode type of running. I could shut it down and wait a bit, and it would run fine for a while. When replacing the fuel filter, I broke the electrical conection and had to replace the housing. Turns out the OEM housings were faulty and leaked air into the fuel. Once I replaced the housing, I never had that problem again.

CRD's don't have a rear pump unless you installed it. They have a mechanical one on the engine driven by the cam timing belt. You can get air in the fuel lines that give this effect. Open the hood and in-board of the brake master is the filter head with a button on it. Pump that button until hard, then try starting. If that doesn't work, may need to check timing belt broke.

You can install a new airtex for a 3500 ram diesel.

The fuel line fittings **** air in because the fittings are meant for pressure not diesel suction. The CRD doesn't have a rear pump like gas engines. The pump is on the engine and pulls from the tank. Lost Jeeps have a thread all about the care and feeding of CRD's.

I also have a 2002 2.5L Export CRD.
This did not come out with a fuel pump inside the fuel tank so you will not hear a pump running.

You do not have to drop the fuel tank to get access to the internals....remove the carpet layer in the rear trunk and you have access to the fuel tank where the fuel level sensor is located.

Some owners have fitted pumps inside the tank or pumps outside the tank.

I have not had any problems in this area with my 2002 CRD.

Check that the fuel filter is new and is fitted properly and there are no fuel leaks in the supply lines.

At the fuel filter there is a large white nylon s.c.r.e.w that you need to loosen and pull upwards. Pump this up and down a few times and crack open the brass nut to expel air. Tighten the brass nut and repeat until the nylon pump rod is firm.

Download the 2002 Jeep KJ Service Manual here but very important is to also download the section: "2_5 2_8 Export Diesel" as it covers your CRD perfectly.

You can pull out any Cel Codes as follows...no Code Readers are available for the 2002 models.

Without starting the engine rapidly turn the ignition ON/OFF 4 times. After the 4th ON action leave the ignition ON.

The Odometer Display will display the Cel in sequence from the newest to the oldest...write them down. Only the first few codes are worth using as the latter ones may be very old and no longer relevant....codes cannot be erased but the old codes do seem to fade away with time.

Hi All,

Sorry for just replying now,

First, thanks everyone for the replies. System was airlocked, very silly of me to let it run that low.

But now I know !
