Making a skid plate. Not so much out of necessity, also for fun and because catalytic converter theft is very popular here. I shouldn't have to worry on a 15 YO Jeep but 2 1/2 lift does make an easy target. Anyway I looked at the situation, came up with a good design, I think. Had a sheet metal shop cut and bend what I'll call a prototype out of .040 sheet metal and looks good. Now I'm having another metal shop cut and bend a 1/4" aluminum plate. Im going to cut holes for mounting and a cutout for oil drain. Im wondering if theres maybe anything else I should consider, before I start cutting, that I might not have thought about. Access to anything, possible heat issues, etc. Just thought I'd post here and see if anyone had any input.

Skids are never a bad idea. They’ve saved my Jeep from expensive hits by road debris more often than rocks on the trail.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I think the Liberty has 2 cats, both positioned up behind the engine, one on each exhaust. Those would be a PITA for a thief to cut out and steal even without skids. The muffler is central under the Jeep after the pipes come together, and the resonator is under the rear.

Mine has two, both between the engine and trans crossbars underneath pretty much right out in the open.

I’m sorry, you’re right. Here is the parts diagram:

I was thinking about trying to reach the upper O2 sensor but it’s in the pipe, not the cat.

I was wondering where those sensors were exactly, in case I have to replace.

Also make sure you have holes where the oil drains from the filter up towards the front, if not any that comes out of filter will run down on your plate and run from there
