Hi everyone, I have a 05 liberty with 31" Grabbers and I am about to buy a set of differentials from a 4 cylinder liberty to have the 4.10 gears. Is it directly bolt on or what is the easiest way to install ? I think i'll just swap the diffs instead of opening and swapping the gears. Will the new 4.10 gears have the same limited slip in the rear ?

Some do, most do not as far as the trash loc goes
Also direct swap , whole diff, would never open it up and just swap gears
Disconnect the ebrake cables, remove calipers and leave brake lines attached and just hang them up to frame, remove shocks, whole tri link bracket etc
then pop in new diff , easy
Front is just as easy , two bolts into the frame ( crossmember ) cut them off since they are in backwards to remove easily, disconnect the mounts and drop out and replace
Easy project for an afternoon, ( well not the whole afternoon LOL )

What lift are you running ?
and how much?

Couldn't there be some abs differences depending on year of donor rear? Even if the "new" rear end doesn't have trak loc it's likely not worth swapping. If you were going to take it apart to upgrade might as well look at a better locker at that point.

Thanks for the clear answer and explanation
Right now I am only running a spring lift but soon i'll buy an ironman kit.
I didn't intend on buying lockers since i want to keep it cheap, i will get both diffs for under 200$ (200 for the set of 2 diffs) so i was counting on the track lock, i like it for my use (90% sand desert in uae)

Spin one axle if both turn the same you have trash loc, if they turn differently , you do not
Hopefully the ones you find do not, since most people do not change the fluids like they should and the trash locs if so equipped wear out fast
plus they call them trash locs for a very good reason

My "trash loc" seems to be working well enough, but if I was going to do diff work I'd put something better in for certain. Nothing like a true locking axle, it's almost like magic, but not.

Tom, did they not make 4 bangers after '05 meaning it's not something he'd want to pay attention to? Asking because I honestly don't know. Not trying to be a smart ***.

They produced KJs with gas 4 cylinders from 02-05, but in 05 they must be more rare than hens teeth, I've never ran across any of them when hunting for 4.10 gears
My 03 had a trash loc in it when I bought it, worked great as well
of course the original owners changed diff fluids with proper additive religiously according to the paper work they gave me

Many of the gear manufactures have always stated not to use synthetic as it does not stay on the gears as well, slings off easily

Okay i'll try to find conventional oil for the next change. What do you think is the best available shock for high speed offroading ? I've found some used ome in my local junkyard today and also a stock shock with king spring so i was thinking of mixing these two

:(
Stock shocks are pure junk from day one
USED OME ? I wouldn't, you never know how they have been used and abused , unless they look brand new
King springs are good as long as they are not stacked ( worn out ) and for the Liberty

The ome strut didn't look too bad, but the spring with it was a little rusty and cracked, that's why i wanted to use the king springs which looked great too
