the regret is coming from is the whole valve body thing. i just sent it back for replacement or repairs. going to be at least 2 more weeks before i get my liberty back.

rebuild was either 12 or 13 hours so about $1200 for labor.

Ah ok. That helps me decipher the costs.

That I don't know. If you want, I can get a number for you and you can call.

That'd be great, PM maybe?

It won't sit in your driveway for more than a few weeks. :happy175:

ATS do a remanufactured 42RLE better stronger internals they are around the $4000 shipped to Australian with currency conversion should be way cheaper over in the US

I'll look into that, thanks!

I'll get the rental contract ready then. :D

Aaron has the name and number for the rebuild guy - I'll get it from him and send it to you this weekend.

Awesome. Thanks.

If it's something he'd be interested in doing and the price is right, I'm hoping the KJ could make it down there.

Sorry to hear that, I just hate "I told you so's". What I didn't mention before is he was getting the same error code you were.....
Holy crap, can you shop around? A buddy of mine recently bought an 04 Grand Cherokee and the trans started slipping badly. Code said it was a bad torque converter, which it was. But with the miles it had (140k), a replacement/rebuild was the sensible thing to have done. I sent him to a highly recommended local independent transmission shop. $1500 out the door (no ups, no extras) for the guy to drop the trans, rebuild it, new torque converter, new shift solenoid pack (done automatically since they tend to crap out and are buried under the valve body), and reinstall. I considered that a hell of a good deal.

This trans shop is in Barrington IL, how far up in WI are you?

Yeah, it was always in the back of my mind that this would happen...I just wanted to rule everything else out first.

I'm up in La Crosse. I'm about 3 hours and change from the Illinois/Wisconsin line. Just looking up Barrington and I'm about 3.5 hours, 250 miles away. I wonder if the KJ could make it? I don't want to trash the pump or anything that might be reused. What's the name of the shop in Barrington?

The brake tap test. Cruise in 4th around 50-60 mph on flat highway light throttle steasy for like 10 seconds, this should lock the torque converter. Then tap the brakes lightly, staying stay on the throttle, and your rpms should go up a couple/few hundred. The idea is that tapping the brakes unlocks the torque converter and your rpms go up.

In my case, tapping the brakes does nothing. Seems this means the torque converter never locks so that's why it can't unlock and that's why the rpms don't go up. Hence the p0740.

From what I gather, there is no way you can tell if the torque converter locks just by "feel" if it's otherwise shifting fine. Like I said, I haven't seen anyone solve this without a torque converter If you keep driving it on the highway when you are getting this code you will eventually overheat the transmission, burn the fluid, and ruin everything. *****.

I did the brake test with my liberty and it jumped from 2000 to 3000 rpms...is that normal? I have po740 also. Mine is acting like out of gas and sometimes won't start

Might want to consider fuel pump.

sometimes those electric motors in the pump go bad intermittently. Do you have a gauge to check fuel pressure? There is a test port on right side of fuel rail.

Can you hear the FP run when you turn the car on, before you hit start? FP runs to prime and pressurize the fuel rail for a few seconds before start.

idk p0740 - no experience there
