How can you tell if the transmission is a 3 plug or 4 plug?

Thanks DadOsix, I knew somebody would find it. I've been super busy and just haven't had time to dig. Hopefully he comes back for the answer

Ok cap’n. I’ve been under it a few hundred times. What am I looking for? Is there 3 plugs stuck in it I don’t see while laying under it or is that to obvious? It’s a 2005 kj sport. Not sure what “build sheet” refers to. Sorry guys. Not a full time mechanic.

Do this first:

Poke in your vin. It will give you the build sheet of how your jeep rolled out of the factory.

look for one of the 2 codes i posted above. If your ****** wasn’t swapped, it should tell you which you have.

Failing the vin / build sheet. Get under the truck.
Driver’s side.
Look up at the transmission.
Count the plugs on the drivers side.

How many do you see?

This is a 4 plug.

No worries! But . Tell us why you have to change your ******.
Was doing about 70 on the interstate when something popped and I lost power to the wheels. Was able to coast off the interstate and into a gas station. Originally took it to an off road shop because I thought it was the transfer case. But after them pulling it and opening it up they said it was fine and that it was my transmission.

Dang! Hope the swap goes well.

that is one thing I have never tried to rebuild. An A/t.

I’m kinda on the fence. I can get the current transmission rebuilt for like $1700 or I can find a used one out of a junk yard. I was trying to compare prices and the salvage yard is the one asking which plug it had. Feeling like the rebuild is the way to go. Just a little more than id like to spend for the condition my liberty is in.

I've done one. They're complicated but the fundamentals haven't changed much since the Model-T. What used to be done with pedals is now controlled by vacuum, hydraulics, and (gah!) computers.
