Sorry i realize this is a liberty group but I my 18yrd just bought an 08 commander to leave for college with in a couple weeks. I feel like a fool and should have ask more question and educated myself more. We drove several hours and the story was it had engine, ****** and transfer case replaced with 74k 3.7 donor parts. Had steel valve covers that leaked and needed replaced. While there I ask why was the whole drive train replaced. The answer was it was easier than unbollting everything. We drove it a couple miles and other than an oil leak it seemed to be what was described. It also came with a set of plastic covers. Hauled it home and replaced them with fel pro gaskets.
Started it up tonight and still leaking oil somewhere from the back it appears. leaking on to exhaust and still smoking. Raised it it and sprayed everything off with brake cleaner to try find leak tomorrow. Then it hit me .. nothing under the bottom is like a liberty. This has the command track and the transfer case and ****** do not look like our 06' . This stuff was supposed to have came out of an 07 liberty. My guess is I didn't catch a lie and we have stuff with 205k miles on it and an oil leak I need to find in the next couple days..

nothing on a commander will match to an 07 or earlier liberty. the commander and the 08+ liberty share platforms and running gear.

Thank you. after crawling around underneath trying to find this oil leak I am almost sure it was not a drive train swap. There are drive shaft bolts on the front of the rear shaft( too transfer case) that still have old rust on the threads. Didn't get to mess with it tonight but still have an oil leak on the driver side. starter has oil on it and it has a stream going down the bottom of what I would call the frame rail on the fire wall. No doubt there was a valve cover problem because there is not a puddle on the ground like before, but both valve covers are dry when I run my hands around them. Not sure I will have this ready for him to take to school.
