I'll be taping up the clamps to see whether that's the cause but I suspect that since the front cross bar is close to the roof, the air forced underneath it is causing the howling noise.

Nah. I'd have had to buy your style online and they cost a fortune which at that point I might as well buy some decent looking ebay crossbars online.
Mine iss the same style as the OP and you did say you wanted to use the OP's version as well.
That is my concern too with this design .... will see how this goes...
No sound issue with yours?

No sound issues at all. The clamps are plasti dipped and the bars are bedlined.

Of course if there were sound issues...I wouldn't hear them over my tires

i used a pretty thick pipe for mine with the tclamp pipe fitting style clamps, had it for a while now but unfortunately will always be limited the the garbage stock roof rails...guess i should turn that pile of square tube i have into some roof rails since the only steel option i know of is RRO

hahaha nice.

how's the bedline over plastidip holding?
I take it I would still need some minor surface of scuffing up the surface before spraying plastidip?

I use IMC instead of EMT conduit so the wall thickness is more.
Definitely pretty sturdy. Wont know till I actually test with the cargo box.
There'll be a lot more dynamic forces applied to this DIY setup.

Love that color combo, the high contrast interior is sweet. I think that one looks modern even today.

So I am looking to do something maybe a bit unconventional. I have some of these square Inno crossbars:

https://www.amazon.com/Finish-Square-Rooftop-Racking-Systems/dp/B004TRIIAE

I want to use them to mount a yakima load warrior permanently but have it low profile like the OP. I can cut them down to size but my issue is how to fasten them to the factory rails. I'm not aware of any kind of tee clamp that will work with a square bar. I've considered trying to mount the bars below the rails with U-bolts but I wonder what, if any, clearance from the roof that will give me.

Thoughts?
