I have an 06, it won't start in the heat of the day. Morning and night, it starts. Replaced head gasket in May, it started having this issue after the head gasket. Replaced starter this week.
Any ideas?

Cam and crank sensors are known to sometimes fail whereby their resistance changes as they get hot. Drive off on a cool morning OK but try re-start it after a short trip and no-go until it cools down.

Usually posts codes!

Is this a gasser or a CRD and does the engine turn over but not fire as per LibertyTC's question?

It starts fine morning, going to work. When I go to lunch, after sitting for 4-5 hours in the sun (temp is around 90), it won't start. Had to "tap" the steering column, near the ignition switch to get it started.
Started fine this morning.

When you pull the ignition switch off from the actuator pin assembly watch out for small debris that may fall down. This means that the tip of the actuator pin has crumbled so replacing only the ignition switch will not help.

If this is the case you can leave the key in the ignition slot to unlock the steering and enable SKIS anti-theft and rotate the ignition switch with a small flat screwdriver to start and run the Jeep....you can then drive off like this until the actuator pin assembly gets replaced.;)

My wife's 05 had a similar issue about a month ago. It would startup fine when cold then after driving a bit or warmed up would hesitate and take longer. Replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor and solved the issue. Easy part to access but it can be a PITA to work out because of age, being gunky.

I did the one on my VW recently to and ended up pulling the sensor out and the cover cap got stuck. Had to used some epoxy putty formed into the hole with a lag bolt put into the putty. Then it pulled easily when dried and a set of vice grips.
