Guys

Have a Jeep Cherokee KJ 2005 3.7L Auto with Towing package. I have replaced the external transmisson cooler with a after market one with a fan however has anyone also plumbed the internal cooler from the radiator to keep the transmission temp from spiking. When I travel mountain roads trans get hot and I cannot seem to stabilise it. Have installed the PML Transmission pan with temp unit and external Transmisson cooler with fan. Hi-way temps are fine.

I have a 2003 that had just the external trans cooler. Had trouble off road a couple times with trans temp spiking so I added the internal rad cooler in line as well as the PML pan. Haven’t had anymore problems and it been over a year now. My Jeep is also heavily modded and not light.

Yes some people have done it. Sounds like a great idea given you're issues. There was a thread by TwoBobsKJ but the pics are all gone. I have an 05 with the standard external cooler and if I replace my rad I'll go that route. My 98 Ranger has the inrad and external ****** cooler and never a problem in 180k.

Ya I wonder if a lot of our summer trans temps are also mainly caused by lack of under hood ventilation. I am pretty sure I can have intake manifold hot dogs ready in 10 minutes! :D
Sure would nice to drive with the hood off! Time for hood louvers??
In summer, I remove the rear rubber hood seal along back of hood & leave it off. It seems to makes a bit of a difference.
I run also with a PML pan with the drain plug. So far so good! Also check to make sure your electric fan is working correctly they should be working above 226F or if A/C is on.
BTW if you do get a trans temp light on, pull over and lift the hood, and let it idle for a few minutes, then give it some revs & it should cool down enough for light to go off.
Also be aware that a "Trans temp light" is an indicator of overheating the trans fluid. Drain it as soon as practical consider new filter, & get some new ATF+4 back in there! :)
