***Models with 45RFE only***

I followed what the 4.7 dodge guys had done. I used their instructions and the FSM wiring diagrams to stop the ignition timing ****** at shifts on my KJ. There is a wire (yellow with green tracer stripe) that signals the PCM when to ****** timing. Simply snipping the wire removes that communication and stops sloppy shifting. I did it and so far I am impressed. Before the snip you could feel the Jeep slow down even before the shift. Now, at part throttle the shifts seem "neutral", the Jeep doesn't lurch forward but it doesn't slow down either. At WOT the shifts feel nice and positive (Jeep lurches forward slightly).

It seems to have no effect on transmission longevity as there are some that have 150K+ with no problems, no check engine light either.

So, unscrew and remove the wiring harness from the TCM, then take the plastic cover off. Snip the #10 wire (it is yellow with a green tracer, see bellow for connector pin out), make sure you are snipping the proper wire as some people on the dodge forums have accidentally snipped the #17 wire (yellow w/ dark blue tracer). If you snip the #17 wire than the trans will shift way to hard. Reinstall the connector onto the TCM, reinstall the screw, then reinstall the plastic cover.
That's it!

Yup, I did this modification to my Ram, I stress to everyone IT WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU HAVE the (5)45RFE trans (5 speed autos). Otherwise you're SOL. Get a converter.

Interesting...what does this do to fuel economy? Does it affect the life of the transmission. Any side effects?

With your pedal to the floor, right before the transmission shifts, the TQM backs off the throttle electronically, for a smooth shift. With this option disabled, the trans will shift a little harder because the throttle is NOT backed off.

I only heard a few RARE cases, with already weak or damaged transmissions, that it wore out a clutch or a clutch pack. IT should have no real ill effects on a healthy transmission; it is basically another comfort shifting thing.

If they would let the transmission shift like it can, there would be less friction on the clutches, but harder shifts. As I said, they should have an option to turn it off, like a "Comfort Shift" button for ON/OFF.

I know that the AW4 used in the XJs had it and so do some GM cars.

Hom much do you think it would have cost Chrysler if they decided to make it standard in the KJ? I think it would be less than $2 per vehicle.

There's a huge discussion/argument going on over at the Dodge Forum about this, whether it hurts the trans when you nail it, or if you need to take it out of OD first so when you nail it you cut out the other 2nd gear.

What? You mean the second kick down gear? I don't see how that could make a difference.

I don't think it will damage the trans, I know of a guy on the WJ forums that has drivin close to 200K since doing the snip and he doesn't have any problems, and he has the 4.7.

People have also reported seeing no increase of metal shavings on the magnet.
