Hi there, I am wanting to remove a cylinder head without having to take off the crankshaft pulley, timing chain cover, etc. I was able to remove one at the junkyard by removing the timing chain guide (the wedge) allowing for removal of the camshaft sprocket from the chain. The bolt that was holding it on there was some kind of star wrench bolt, and I had to hammer in a T30, strip the bolt, and then hammer in a T40 in order to remove the bolt, completely destroying the bolt in the process. I was able to remove the cylinder head afterwards but this process was not reproducible.

Is there a specific tool / star wrench that works correctly for this bolt? It seemed like the right size was somewhere between T30 and T40 but I couldn't find any in that range.

T35? I am pretty sure i is a regular torx, just a between size you didnt have.

I dont think this will work.

If you slack the timing chains at all you will need to reset the tensioners before you can re-assemble. Timing marks also need to line up perfectly, and this has never gone simple and easy for me even when I have everything apart. Nevermind trying to do it with most of the timing system covered.

If you try it, make sure to rotate it by hand a few times and check all our TDC marks each rotation to be sure it is correct and doesn't go out of time.

I agree with Mrlavalamp. When I replaced head gaskets on mine I used a T35 to remove the bolt. Be prepared for the top guide to break when you remove it. It is made with some plastic pieces, so when you break that bolt loose it shattered on me (left side).
