Am I understanding correctly that a little over fill of ATF+4 in the 42RLE is ok, actually a good thing?
I replaced a section of trans line last night, and had to top off fluid this morning. Only had time to go around the block a couple of times, not even a mile, but did idle for a while, total run time before adding fluid maybe 20 minutes. Lost a little fluid when changing the line, and trans was just below the 'hot' dot last check (after 30 mile hot drive). I added about one pint (half of a quart). Want to be sure I didn't overfill.
Will check later when my son gets home with it (after half hour drive in 80 degree weather). He had to get to work this morning, so I was rushed. Didn't want fluid too low.
Thanks.

A little low is better than a little over.

I agree, but saw several posts saying the opposite is true for the 42RLE and I was curious. Supposedly off-roaders do this to keep the sump from sucking air or something.

I checked the level tonight after a half hour drive and it's just a hair above the top dot, so all is well. But if anyone is wondering about extra fluid in the 42RLE, there are posts on more than one forum where people insist that a quart over doesn't bother these transmissions. However, I am going with what the manual says to do.

I have found the same to be the case, with multiple posters of some credible tenure stating as much. I have repeated this finding a few times on here and on LOST. I find that it is the Wrangler owners who often tilt their trucks pretty good off-road that say overfilling by a quart is preferable and hurts nothing.

I was never clear if the same could be done on the KJ 42RLE because of differences in the trans pan, if any.

I overfill mine by a quart form time to time, but that is also less "bad" because my trans pan leaks about a quart every 4-6 weeks. It will continue to do so until next week when I replace it.
