With the door open, if I press any direction on the power mirror switch regardless of L or R orientation, it triggers the door ajar with key in chime. The chime does not go off otherwise. And this does not happen with the door closed. The switch does not operate the mirrors. The mirrors function as I have tested all 4 directions on both. My thinking is obviously a short somewhere but cant find any broken or exposed wires. Any tips on where to look? Could it be a ground?

I would suspect the harness going into the door cavity fraying to chassis or some wires in the harness shorting together.

If you have the ignition key inserted and open the door do you get the chime as expected?

Nope. Door chime only happens if all apply: key in, door open, and a power mirror button pressed. Its almost as if the door ajar circuit is be completed by the power mirror switch.

Yeah good luck with this one:Insane:

You will have to make do with the 2006 Wiring Diagrams and trace the wires going from the BCM to the widow switches and onwards to the mirrors themselves looking for continuity from point to point and no shorts or partial shorts to chassis and if you completely cut off leads at both ends you should not measure any continuity to chassis or any other wires in that area...take splices into account.

The ignition switch, apart from the rotary components to switch ignition on/off and start the Jeep, has a single push switch which is activated by the key being inserted fully into its slot. When this switch is made ground is run through to the BCM to let it know that a key is present.

I would suspect the wire that goes from this switch to the BCM may have a partial short to the mirror switches so you need to cut off both ends of this wire and replace it with a new wire...taking the shortest route. Also check the ground going to this switch

I had to replace about 7 wires in this manner on my 2002 Export CRD.
Weird things would happen...if I turned on the front wipers the battery voltage would rise to 17 volts and the engine would shut down. The same thing would happen if I turned on the AC and other problems....boiled the battery to death!
The main harness on the KJs goes all the way around the engine bay to get to its final destination...in my case a frontal impact damaged these wires inside a large harness up front going through a metal beam below the radiator...impossible to get to!:emotions34:
