So I bought a 2003 Jeep Renegade last week and it just started throwing the P0171 code, only that code. I know it can be allot of things but I know for certain it needs an spark plugs and I found this rotten pipe. I had a sport model so I know this thing is burning more gas than it should.
And more exhaust leaks here than comes out the tail pipe, but was told exhaust leaks will not cause that code.

the sensor that is in the top of that rotted exhaust is throwing the code

Would that cause my milage to crap out, and I was told by several "experts" that would it Not cause the lean fuel code, just an emmisiions code that if it was an air problem causing lean fule it would be intake and not exhaust.

Yea those Help forums where they claim they have "real mechanics" answering questions. Two different places claiming to be "Jeep Experts" told me that lol, guess they are not as they claim to be.

Direct quote "an exhaust leak, that far upstream would only be forcing cleaner air through the exhaust therefore not trigger any codes because nothing would read high"

So o tapped it and the outer layer peeled off. What am I looking for to order a replacement, Drivers side cat? Nothing else looks anything like it when trying to order new part. I perfer to buy the part and have the local garage do it, he only orders from NAPA because they are the only ones close enough to deliver same day. I prefer to have more options.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The pic your showing a downstream O2 sensor which only monitors the cat and has in no way any effect on MPG's.

In 22 years I have yet to diagnose a P0171/P0174(B1/B2 lean) code that was caused by a O2 sensor problem. You will get O2 codes well before any lean/rich codes.

Intake leaks(gaskets, hole in manifold, and vacuum lines),bad MAF(which 3.7 KJ does not have),bad MAP sensor,or a fuel system issue are the most common cause of lean codes.

Oh and just because you have a "sport" model has no bearing on MPG's either.Sport,Limited,or Renny models is just a appearance package.Okay the Renny package will effect MPG's a little due to the lightbar but nothing big, maybe 0.5-1 MPG loss over a non-Renny KJ.

Items like plugs, fresh fluids through out, tires, and such things effect MPG's along with driving style, weather, gas used.12-16 MPG's is normal for a 3.7 KJ for city and you should be 19-22 MPG's highway if properly maintained.

Cat is leaking from the sure and around the upper 02 sensor on that cat, but only showing p071 code, both with reader and the three key turn trick. Runs fine, the only reason I mentioned sport is because I have the same Jeep and year and motor in the sport package and it got much better milage that this one, which is a Renagade does have the light bar, Other than milage it drives fine, runs normal, idles normal.

Soo the light went off, it still shows the code on the dash display if you do the 3x key jingle trick, but no check engine light.
