Is it 42RLE or 45RFE?

You've got a 45RFE. Another way to tell is that your cats sit perpendicular to the ground, not parallel. I'm unsure of the build date that they switched in the KJ. But don't forget if they had multiple plants, some may have switched earlier. They could have STARTED switching in April of '03.

All KJs were built in Toledo OHIO

And have ate at Tony Packos many times

The build date on my 2003 Liberty Limited 4x4 is 06-03 or June 2003. I have the control module on the passenger side inner fender well and the rear transmission cross member with a curve toward the rear bumper (not a straight rear trans cross member). So, the build date would indicate a 42RLE per prior post but the control module on the passenger fender and curved rear trans support would indicate 45RFE. Could the April '03 changeover date be in error? Or did Jeep put the 45RFE in all 4x4's in 2003? Hope so as I prefer the 45 RFE. Will try to get the build sheet from a dealer to confirm on my Liberty one way or the other.

Build sheets can be inaccurate often. Best way to figure out what you have is to look at it.

So, it would seem logical that the build sheet is wrong in my case. Thank you.

Number of bolts in the trans pan is also a sure-fire indicator, as well as finding the actual stampings/tags on the transmission housing.

This can be easily determined by not even getting on your knees if you don't want to do that. Open the hood, look on the passenger side fender. If there is a computer mounted on the fender (silver box, with a bunch of wires coming out of it, white sticker attatched....

You have the 45RFE.

If this computer (Transmission Control Module) is absent, you have the 42RLE.

With that said, I can't STAND misinformation...

Too bad you can't stand misinformation yet your spewing enough to misinform every one. I signed up just to save other people the hassle of buy the wrong parts. This in no way is true. Mine has the fender tcm and it's a 42 not a 45 so thanks for wasting my time and money. Your post should be deleted so others aren't dupped. So thanks for the headache.

Sad to say this guy is right.

Some '03 KJ's could have the 42RLE with a separate TCM on the right fender.

'03's also could have 1 or 3 different exhaust systems.It was a transition year from the 45RFE to the 42RLE.

The only 100% sure way to tell is to get underneath and look at the trans.

You can go to any dealer and get a build sheet in 30 seconds - if you are impatient like me. I did. Just give them the last 8 numbers of your vin.

I found a link somewhere that too me too the jeep website and got it myself. Didn't even need to go to the dealer.

I just been looking at the trans oil lines. So far only the 42s have them going under and across the transmission (prone to rotting at this spot) I’m no expert but it’s worked so far while in the junkyards here

To get your build sheet online go to the jeep website on desktop or desktop mode in your browser and click contact us at the bottom. On the left hand side click equipment listing and type in your vin and you can download it.
