Driving home from work and the Jeep decides that it doesn’t want the driveshaft anymore
Cruising at 70 and it was vibrating like crazy, came to an off ramp and I felt it snap right off
Thankfully I got to the side of the road because now, as you might expect, I can’t move
We’ll see where it goes from here!

Front wheel drive
That is if the transfer case is in one piece. And fuel lines are intact .

My XJ did the same thing to me in the middle of the desert, took the shattered rear slip yoke and placed it back in the transfer to prevent any leaks. Engaged 4wheel drive, and got home 60-80 miles.

Not sure what exactly is still intact, all I know is when I try putting it in drive it makes a repeated banging sound and won’t stay in gear- just rolls
Broke at the rear diff

Got any pics where it broke? Did it snap at the rear U-Joint, any leaks ?
This *****...I hope you can get it repaired soon.

I know my driveshaft is rusted bad. Time to get it re-newed and re-balanced this year.

Is that in 4WD?

I remember I had some Ujoints grenade on me on the highway once - not fun at all.

I’ll try to get a picture on tonight but it came off right where it attaches to the rear diff
Hoping it’s a simple fix but we’ll see!

I put it in 4wd and it would’ve been driveable but all I had in the Jeep were ratchet straps to try and hold the driveshaft up off of the ground but I didn’t want to take the chance if it banging on something else and causing more issues

Yeah that wouldn’t have worked since it’s still be trying to spin the drive shaft. On my old XJ the way the rear drive shaft connected to the transfercase was a slip yoke. If it’s doesn’t break violently and the drive shaft is in one piece we’d just pull the shaft out of the transfer case and put it in the back. Im not sure how the KJ driveshaft connects but if it’s still there I’d guess it’s bolted in place.

It's a slip yoke on the tcase end, then bolted to the rear diff.

can someone put together a minimal tools list to be able to remove the front or rear driveshafts in case of catastrophic breakage like this?

if you have a metric socket set, you're all set I believe.

Yep, that's all you need. Front one you'll want 1/4" drive maybe.

I wasn’t going to be attempting to remove that in the rain on the side of the highway.. I was laying in a mud puddle trying to put a ratchet strap across to keep the driveshaft off of the ground for the tow truck so it went to the shop
All done and fixed now, needed a whole new driveshaft and bolt/bushing(s) (not sure what he said exactly) for the rear diff supposedly because it completely sheared off
Guess I need to deflate the rear airbags and let it sag a little so it has less of a sharp angle!

U-joints with zerks with regular lube might help. Catastrophic failures suck.

Would really like to see a pic of what failed.

Removing the driveshaft at that point would've been easier than trying to put a ratchet strap under there. It just slides right out

That’s a better flange design than the old XJ has, when they broke those it tore up the axel yoke too, this looks limited to the u-joints and drive shaft. Must have made a hell of noise.
