No light for 2WD. There are lights for Full Time 4WD, Part Time 4WD and 4WD Lo

The switch on transfer case going bad is common. Most times when bad the light will stay on 4 part time when in 2wd

Just FYI, the part that shifts from 2wd to 4wd to 4lo is called the transfer case. The transmission has a bit of a different job.

Is it actually shifting into 4wd and 4lo? There should be a significant amount of resistance and a noticeable clunking as it goes in and out of 4wd.

If it is shifting, the transfer case sensor has probably gone bad. Unfortunately they do that, and they’re a pita to change. The sensor is a simple plunger switch that sits on top of the transfer case and turns the 4wd lights on and off as it ‘feels’ where the shift fork is in the case.

So, yeah, there are lights on the dash that aren’t used in all applications. If/when you get the indicator light working, don’t be alarmed if one or more of the lights never comes on.

Not the mountains.
Replace your transfer case position switch. I crawled underneath my KJ with a wrench and switched it out. Getting the electrical harness disconnected was the only thing that consumed the most time for me.
