question: why not a smart phone (or a tablet with internet) and use waze or google maps?
I've tried my smartphone and it wasn't acceptable. Besides, cell service is spotty enough in the town and the highways where I live and play and nonexistent off-road.

Howdy everyone
I'm a new KJ owner. I just bought an 05 liberty CRD. I have heard the torque converters are an issue. So I have a couple of general questions hoping someone might know the answers to.

While navigation is one of the most important uses travelers have for their smartphones, how often do you think about exactly how a phone knows where you are and where you're going? You might not know that in addition to connecting to cellular towers, your phone is constantly tracking GPS signals from satellites circling the planet—and that you can use your phone GPS without data for more purposes than you might expect.

If you've ever tried to navigate in a place where your phone has weak or no cellular service, you probably wished you could take advantage of offline phone GPS. Fortunately, you can:
GPS signals are raining down around us at all times, and your phone can connect to them without any real reliance on your cellular company, impact on your data plan, or dependence on the phone mode you are in. These signals are free for all of us to use, so long as we have the right apps and a device with which to connect.

Been reading up and am going to start using an old phone for my GPS, so main cell stays charged up when I get back to civilization

I've had excellent luck with the app sygic navigation for just that purpose, highly recommend it.

What kind did you get? On my second new Mopar one. :favorites68:

i know everyone recommends the mopar one but i bought a brand new napa radiator for $170 when the factory one went. they have a lifetime warranty, so i have gotten 3 others for free over the years. yea it is a pain in the ass to have to change the radiator, but it only takes about 45 minutes start to finish.

It depends on which app you use on your phone. Some allow you to download maps of the areas you're interested in, the app then just uses these downloaded maps and doesn't need access to cell data.

But other apps don't have this option, and constantly need cell data to connect to the online maps.

Google Maps, Waze (owned by Google) and Apple Maps all failed us last summer on several secondary roads between SC and FL when cell signal dropped.

Oddly enough, travel companions in another vehicle (Hyundai, I think) using built-in navigation where able to continuously map our route.

I may need to try some experiments to understand the reason. Perhaps the satellite receiver/antenna is simply better on the built-in systems.

Yes, but some apps still need cell data to link that GPS position to an online map. You always have a GPS location, but that is useless if your phone can't load the map to display that location on, because it needs cell data retrieve that map.

Nowadays the feature to download maps so you can use them without a cell signal later on is becoming more and more common, but there still are lots of navigation apps that always need cell data in order to function properly.

I wish we'd leave our roads alone like that, and stop salting/plowing the shit out of them every time a single flake touches down.

Me too. It takes like 4"+ of snow here to actually have snowy roads from all the salt and sand they use.

put in a new battery.
Records show mopar battery that came with it was just shy of 3 years old.
But in mornings it was cranking kind of slow.
I installed a Johnson Controls (walmart everstart max, 3 year free replacement warranty) and it cranks great now.
