Have to fill gas slowly

I haven't driven my 2005 Liberty 3.7l auto much lately. Last time I filled it up at a station was spring of 2015 and everything was fine then. My radiator broke and it sat for a while. Once and a while I would start it up and even had to put some gas in from a jerry can a couple of times.

This winter I started driving it again and I went to put some nice new gas in and it would take it very fast. The nozzle kept clicking off. I couldn't even put it on the first click. Next time I needed fuel I tried another gas station and the same thing happened.

Any suggestions on where to start looking for the problem? I'm pretty sure this issue is different from the gas splash back issue (which I didn't have by the way). I'm also not getting any sort of a CEL.

Interesting. My 05 does this too, and my 02 does not. I haven't had the 05 for long (only since end of Dec) but I've gotten sort of used to it since my 01 Outback does the same thing. I've found if you don't put the gas nozzle in quite as far as it will go, it fills fine. Had to do this the few times I've filled the 05 KJ too. Worked for me and I didn't spill any.

My 04 does this also i have tried putting the nozzle in all sorts of different ways no change.I think it has something to do with the breather but havent got around to dropping the tank to check it out

the 6th comment states: Warning! Do not run engine at a gas station to fill!

"Two hints: 1) If the engine is running, it will fill normally. 2) If I remove the hoses from the EVAP purge valve (near the battery) it will fill normally.
Clearly the vapors are not being released correctly from the tank during filling.
A thorough visual and manual inspection of filler, tank and EVAP area is normal. No kinks, dents, twists, crack, leaks, etc"

I'm not seeing any physical kinks in the hoses so I am thinking the roll over valve is partially stuck restricting fuel flow in to the tank. I'm going to try some lucas fuel treatment and see what happens.

I always thought it was the gas pumps! I've complained about this to numerous kwik fill workers :happy175:

That's kinda funny... I'm sure they were VERY helpful, right? lol.

On GM trucks, this is a very common issue. EVAP purge valve and solenoid and all related vac lines from the back bumper (where the EVAP valve is) to the engine get replaced... cant vent properly, causes a pressure build up in the tank, I'm told..

I just thought it was the pumps because my old winter car, 05 Taurus, used to do the same thing until I had the nozzle in just the right direction. But seemed like it was a constant battle for the first 5-10 dollars lol

I think I fixed the slow full problem. I haven't put gas in my Jeep since January and I need some today. Prior to filling up I took my small plumber snake and pushed it down the full tube. I didn't encounter any resistance but after doing that I was able to fill the tank at full speed.
