The 6, 8mm bolts at the front CV joint that the instructions show. I didn't think it should be either. That's why I asked. Earlier in the thread someone was asking another person if they had any gear oil when they took theirs apart, and the other person replied that they had already drained the front diff.[/

Do the bolts you are removing turn in a circle with the drive shaft?

I barrows the pic from the original post, but it's the bolts shown here.

Oh, and it was nice clean looking oil. Not nasty black junk.

I'm guessing you had nice clean grease in your joint. I don't see how gear oil from your front differential could get in there

Is there SUPPOSED to be oil in there? I thought it would be grease like you put into the rear cv joint.

That what separated? The grease itself? It was mostly clear with a little brown tint (best description I got). Looked like the gear oil in the diff. Smells like it too.

Was the boot torn? Maybe it was water that mixed with the grease and gunk a little.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help out. I finally had time to search through the forum some, and apparently it happens a lot. Several people have posted about the same thing.

But most of them said it was only about 1-2 tablespoons worth of oil, and that once they dried it out, they drove around a bit without the drive shaft, and it never even got wet again.

So, I dropped the shaft, dried it out, swapped the rear cv joint, then rechecked, and it was still dry.

Uss2defiant, some others had said the same thing you did.

day off, changing the transfer case side for the second time in a year... this time it doesnt want to seat into the transfer case. didnt have this problem last time, should i just tap it in or is something not right ?

so i lightly tapped it in with a hammer, tightened down the bolts and went for a drive in 4wd....clunk clunk clunk. Good thing we are only getting about 10 inches tonight

Interesting... Been seeing recent posts of this issue. Are your replacement parts comparable to the old parts? Also did you seat the ball joint part on the spine correctly?
