Sadly, it doesn't look like I'm going to reach 100k trouble-free miles on my 42RLE.

Today, while giving the Jeep an oil change, I noticed something odd. The engine block was spotless, other than some mud. I mean, absolutely clean. Ran my finger over it and didn't turn it black with caked-on gunk. So no engine oil leaks, which is good.

But the transmission pan and bell housing are coated in a thin layer of fluid, which turned out to be red in color, so transmission fluid it is. It's not leaving spots when parked on the driveway, so it's not leaking when parked, but apparently only when running.

I'm starting to suspect the front seal on the transmission is leaking.

For now I'm just monitoring the fluid level, but it looks like some transmission work is going to be occurring in the near future. Pretty certain I don't want to drive cross-country in December with a leaky transmission.

Any idea how much this is going to cost to fix? I'm assuming this isn't something I can do on jackstands in my garage, as the transmission will need to be removed to get at it. So I may as well do the high capacity pan, solenoids, Trans-go shift kit, and boost bushing in to firm things up. I've also been looking at the ATS HD Torque converter, anyone use one of those? Worth it? Anything I'm overlooking, or advice to be given?

checked the speed sensors on the driver side?

Well, considering the passenger side was soaked, no, I didn't look. But I'll check it tomorrow.

Why not? I replaced my 42RLE with the Jeep on jackstands in my back yard.

Yeah, but I'm a fat ass.

Yeah, I could probably get it out. Not sure about replacing the seal, though. I wonder if the transmission housing needs to be split, or not? I'll have to dig out my repair manual.

definitely check the sensors.
My pressure sensor on the passenger side was leaking but was slowly dripping on to the floor on the driver side.

I just did the pan seal on an 02 and it was one of the easier ones I've ever done. Went with RTV instead of a gasket. Like a few others have said, check the sensors before you assume it's the pan gasket. Best way is to degrease and clean the heck out of it and pinpoint the leak immediately after driving a few miles. The sensors only leak while driving and will leave a few drips on the driveway when parked and then stop.
