oct 2015 i got the letter for the hitch recall, made an appt couldnt get in till jan 21/2016. so i drive 2 1/2 hours one way to take the jeep (2006 liberty 160000 klm) in for the hitch only to be told to much rust nothing they could do. my mechanic said the jeep is good condition normal rust for a 10 yr old vehicle and in his opnion could have the hitch installed, plus the jeep pass an mvi no problem. is this just an excuse for jeep not to installed the hitch, plus now im left with an unsafe vehicle that i and my daughter drive.

what are my options here , am i s**t outta luck here. i feeel dodge should buy it back tsake it off the road. has anyone ran into this problem if so what were the results.. thanks geoff

Bet if you could get to another dealer they would install it
Still wondering why you think they should buy it back ?:icon_lol:

I want to see all this rust the dealership is talking about!
Post a few photos from under there.
If another shop said no problem, the only problem is that dealership as Tom mentioned.
If you cant go to another dealer, get the paperwork in order from other shop in a statement and a few photos, then call Chrysler customer care line and raise a little hell!

Why should Chrysler in general buy back over a million Jeeps that passed crash tests over a decade ago in the first place? Then they should buy back every car from the 80's due to not having ABS, SRS, or TCS etc.... because they're ''not safe'' now with today's safety standards. It doesn't matter where the gas tank is, it can rupture in any type of accident, a rear end collision, front end collision, and a side collision if hit hard enough by a larger heavier vehicle IE ''Big Truck'', a roll over accident, or a ''spectacular accident'' that makes it on to worlds wildest videos. Most of you know my views on this whole ordeal anyways.

As part of the latest offer for this recall, Jeep will either install the factory hitch, inspect yours and say it's good, buy back your Liberty outright or give you a certain amount above the buy back price on a trade in towards a new vehicle. So buy back is an option. Whatever you choose you a still entitled to get the $100 VISA gift card. I just bought our 06 in Sept and had the hitch installed and got the $100.

The dealer probably "Buys it back" and then sells it for a bunch more as a used vehicle after doing the recall work. Sounds like some sort of gimmick to me. They sure as sh#t ain't gonna crush them.

Precisely, I did it just because I wasn't turning down a free hitch and that I worked at Chrysler during the time of the recall so during my tenure it was going to get done when I put in the shop regardless of wanting it or not.

I got the recall letters. . And mine has the factory ( or dealer installed ) hitch.. i figures it was a way for them to get it in, then try to upsell service work.

I called Jeep 800 number and they said $150 VISA card. Bought the KJ Jeep in Jan. did the recall and have a card in the mail coming to me. Nice.

They gave you the $100 Visa card even though you had the recall completed? I found an article online about the $100 GC but it stated that to be eligible you must not have had the N46 recall completed. I sent an email to FCA Canada inquiring because why not. If I can get $100 out of them I might as well.

Apparently my stealership kept the $100 gift card.

2 reasons

If they can't make it safe and knew it wasn't safe to start with, and if the frame is so rust damaged that a hitch isn't possibly its probably to rusted to drive safely. Toyota fixed their rusty frames under their vehicles when they were 10+ years old. I doubt they can patch in the metal cheaper than they can replace the entire vehicle.

Actually their own engineers told them in 1978 that putting the gas tank behind the rear wheels on higher setting vehicles was a safety issue even greater than the exaggerated claims made against the Ford Pinto.

Other manufacturers had acknowledged this issue in the 1980s - as even my old Bronco - with a rear mounted gas tank - has a metal "deflect" structure around it. Granted it makes doing anything with the fuel tank a PIA but it shows that other American manufacturers were dealing with the issue decades ago while Chrysler chose to ignore it - even before they bought Jeep.

Not Jeeps fault, thats the owners fault entirely if that rusted
Millions on the roads that are not
Too many think someone else owes them and try to get something for nothing
Toyota was their fault since the frames sucked from the get go!

Still total BS
