Looking for metal impeller water pump?

All things considered, as many water pumps I've seen with metal impellers eaten away by corrosion until vehicles begin to overheat without any seal leakage, I'm not too sure a properly specked fiber impeller wouldn't be a better idea. It ain't like they've got to resist the occasional rock or stick passing through. :emotions34:

Those were my thoughts too, a fiber impeller won't corrode. 140k on mine, and counting...knock wooden head.
I wouldn't have one on a boat engine though, where you might sand blast it. :gr_grin:

As a minor, part-time inboard boat service monkey, never seen nor heard tell of a impeller failure on the recirculating pump (same as the one used in automotive applications). What does require regular replacement is the rubber impeller in the pickup pump. Usually located in the lower unit, or running directly off the front of crankshaft.

Good to hear that they aren't a 100k item. The last vehicle I owned with a composite pump was a '98 BMW 3-series, they were known for letting go around 100k (shaft spins but the impeller doesn't). Those old inline 6 aluminum heads didn't take much overheating to warp and pop the head gasket!

I'll just keep an eye on my temp in Dash Command. :)

Volkswagon has a major problem with the plastic impeller water pumps. they crack off the bearing shaft and then proceed to warp the head.

As the poster ahead of me said bmw has a major problem also with plastic impellers.

I guess jeep sprung for the good plastic because you don't hear much trouble with them. Just you normal failures like the bearing in my case.

VW,Audi,or BMW doesn't matter they all are the same exact crap(same company).

Umm, no they aren't (BMW completely unrelated) but anyways, I don't think the longevity of the water pump (100k+ miles) in Jeeps is bad at all. It is a cheap and easy fix.

Same company.You can find VW stamping underneath both Audi's and BMW's.VW owns most of Europe's car company's.

Sorry, no, but not worth arguing over. VW auto group has divisions for Audi, Bugatti, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, and of course, VW. BMW is its own company and owns Rolls Royce and Mini.

Besides both having headquarters in Germany, these are very different companies with no large ownership interest in one another.

In any case, back On topic, if you are replacing the water pump it is a great opportunity to replace radiator hoses, flush and fill the fluid with the MOPAR or Zerex equivalent, and inspect/replace the cap.

I always replace the hoses, tstat, and radiator cap when replacing a wp or radiator. My timing cover was also leaking so I had to replace the coolant passage o-rings, crank seal, and re-rtv the cover. Not bad considering the original lasted 220k miles.

I do as well, just common thing to do
Of course my 04 gets them changed out every so many miles anyways

currently have a bosch wp with metal impeller. i have a leak somewhere either the gasket or the impeller bearings after 37K miles. ordered the cardone and see how that works.

....though i probably over worked my wp driving with O/D off and high rpm. high rpm = faster belt and cooler engine :p
