that was happening to me until I put in the new PCV.
Give the additives a try? No harm I'd say.

I'd recommend a half bottle of Seafoam in the crankcase and change the oil after about 300-500 miles. Did wonders for mine. I've used MMO and it worked well too but wouldn't recommend leaving it in too long. I've heard people will sub a quart of MMO for a quart of oil but that seems a bit drastic to me.

A compression test is required.
Burning aprox a quart every tank..something is worn well./bad.

Been a while since I have updated this thread but have some updates. Mid summer 2014 I started keeping up with oil consumption and noticed about every 398 miles it would go through a quart of oil. I took it to dealer and they wanted $1000 to tear down engine and determine cause of consumption. I just figured they could drop a flexible web camera down into engine and see what's going on. So opted out of that option and just put up with it for a while. Then about 4 weeks ago my daughter calls to tell me that the jeep is riding very rough and acts like it is wanting to stall while engine light came on. I drove if later on and could not reproduce the problem and looked up error code which was cylinder 6 misfire. Took it to mechanic and he checked all plugs and wires and could not find any indication of problems. Compression test revealed nothing and I let him keep it for a couple days and he could not reproduce the problem. Well while he had it there it needed an oil change anyway and he suggested Lucas oil treatment so we did that. Fast forward to today the jeep has been 401 miles since oil change and oil levels have not dropped at all (?)
So don't know if because the Lucas oil treatment is just a heavier oil or maybe whatever causes cylinder 6 to misfire but some things changed. Wife thinks when it was shuddering really bad that day that it just "farted" out whatever was stuck in engine. I'm at a loss but checking oil levels every 3 days.

Good news oil consumption is good again.
The Jeep does not have any spark plug wires. Its has coil packs.
Even though he "checked" the plugs they should have been replaced to new.
Did you see the plugs, what was the burn color like?
If you had a misfire code for the # 6 cylinder, that coil pack should have been moved to another cylinder, to see if that code moved. Keep an eye on that coil pack and consider new spark plugs, if that as not been already done.
Instead of the compression test revealing nothing, it should have revealed the actual compression numbers, which is what you need to know.
Lucas oil may have definitely helped. In an engine that really burns oil, STP can help as well.

Lucas and STP are just oil modifiers which just makes it more viscous.

If your mechanic hasn't done so, I would recommend
1. checking whether your ignition coils are good. Start by switching coil #6 to a different location and see whether the problem follows.
2. run MOPAR combustion chamber cleaner

That was a mistype on my part about stating plug wires. I should have clarified better as I was typing that up when half awake and this topic was on my mind. Looking at the write up he did on the jeep he did mention he tested the coil pack by moving it to another location and revealed nothing in his testing and the plugs are only a year old but he did not see any indication of high temperature wear or damage to plug. He checked gap on all plugs and they were correct. I will mention the MOPAR combustion chamber cleaner to him next time service is needed on the jeep. Thanks everyone for replies.

Well finally confirmed that misfire on cylinder 6 is result of head gasket leak. Water ended up pouring into cylinder and damaging other components. We looked for new vehicle and weighed idea of taking on new car payment but since jeep is paid for opted for remanufactured engine. So also had radiator, water pump, hoses, plugs, tstat all replaced. All for 4700 and 3 year warranty. Just stinks engine went after 125k miles. But been running on reman engine for 45 days and it has not burned oil and coolant at all. Jeep runs like new vehicle and does not ride rough like it used to.

Your engine made it 50,000 more miles than my engine did.

Who'd you get engine from?

Local garage here named Jason's Auto. They specialize in engine and transmission rebuilds. I can ask where they got the reman engine from. Jasper engine was $1600 more than getting a rebuilt one.
